She graduated from the local farm school. On April 25, 1940, she married Raymond (Ray) Hinkel. The first year of their marriage, they farmed on Raymond’s grandfather’s farm south of Tuttle, ND.  In 1941, they bought the Unruh homestead south of Arena, where they raised four children. Ray passed away in 2000, but Elma continued living on the farm until 2007.Elma was a tireless worker. Besides the normal chores of a housewife, Elma was the epitome of a “farm wife”, selfless. She did professional upholstery, sewing, and embroidery. Elma was noted as being a fantastic cook, mother, wife, sister, and daughter. She was very competitive and participated in any game from volleyball to solitaire. She was unbeatable at Scrabble or Boggle and played those games to the end. Elma had many interests outside the home including Bible study, Wing Homemakers, Ladies Aid, and Sunday school; they all benefited from her participation. In 1987, at the age of 70, Elma got a job with Burleigh County Social Services. She was responsible for traveling the county, assisting the elderly, many of whom were younger than she!  She retired from the County in 2001 at the age of 84!  Elma loved to laugh and enjoyed everyone’s company.
