Elma Leona Hinkel, 100, Bismarck, died April 26, 2017, at Baptist Health Care Center in BismarckFuneral services will be held on Monday, May 1, at 11:00 AM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Rev. Merle Hoots and Rev. Kent Hinkel officiating. Burial will be at Mennonite Zion Cemetery in Arena, ND.Visitation will be held on Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.Elma was born on January 28, 1917, on the family farm at Arena, ND, to William and Lena (Ensz) Deckert. She graduated from the local farm school. On April 25, 1940, she married Raymond (Ray) Hinkel. The first year of their marriage, they farmed on Raymond’s grandfather’s farm south of Tuttle, ND. In 1941, they bought the Unruh homestead south of Arena, where they raised four children. Ray passed away in 2000, but Elma continued living on the farm until 2007.Elma was a tireless worker. Besides the normal chores of a housewife, Elma was the epitome of a “farm wife”, selfless. She would milk cows, help haul hay bales, pick field rocks, weed tree rows, mow the farmstead, and help with any other chore that needed doing. She did professional upholstery, sewing, and embroidery. Elma was noted as being a fantastic cook, mother, wife, sister, and daughter. She was very competitive and participated in any game from volleyball to solitaire. She was unbeatable at Scrabble or Boggle and played those games to the end. Elma had many interests outside the home including Bible study, Wing Homemakers, Ladies Aid, and Sunday school; they all benefited from her participation. In 1987, at the age of 70, Elma got a job with Burleigh County Social Services. She was responsible for traveling the county, assisting the elderly, many of whom were younger than she! She retired from the County in 2001 at the age of 84! Elma loved to laugh and enjoyed everyone’s company. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.Elma is survived by her daughter, Shirley Lockbeam, White Bear Lake, MN; her son and daughter-in-law, Dwight and Sheila (Ohlhauser) Hinkel, Bismarck; twelve grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother, Orville and Maria (Hiebert) Deckert, Bismarck; sister, Burnette Teske, Fargo; and sister-in-law, Ruth Deckert, Arena.She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; son, Daryl; daughter, Sharon; grandson, Troy Lockbeam; sister, Lilly (Buller); brothers, Art, George, Henry, and Bernard; sisters-in-law, Ethel, Doris-Jean, and Anne; and brothers-in-law, David Buller and John Teske.
