Ernest Peter Gartner, fondly known as Ernie, passed away Tuesday February 13th, 2018 at the age of 92. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 am Friday, February 16, at Church of Corpus Christi, 1919 N. 2nd Street, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Thursday, February 15, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Ernie was a long-standing member of the Bismarck community, taking on the legacy of his father in owning and operating Gartner’s Shoe Repair. Ernie was an active member of the community, providing leadership in many organizations, actively participating in his parish, serving as a board member of St. Mary’s High School, and as a Knights of Columbus. He was widely respected for his humility, his service, and strength of character. Ernie’s son Mark took over ownership of Gartner’s Shoe Repair in 1996, and it was not unusual to still see Ernie at the counter just wanting to stay in the thick of things. Mark will always remember the wonderful opportunity he had working side-by-side with his father and mentor for over 40 years. We, his children, remember him most for: his love, his sense of humor, his laugh, his unending patience, and his loving counsel. Our Dad was always there; no matter what, we always knew we could count on him. We carry special memories of together time with our Dad, whether it was floating down the river, going to the cabin, a trip to Australia and the outback, picking Juneberries, driving lessons (where he was very patient), or snowmobiling. As he said frequently, “I’ve lived such a good life and am grateful”; and we know he touched many lives. Our heartfelt thanks to the many healthcare providers that took such good care of our Dad, bless you all for the love and kindness you showed him. Ernie is survived by his four children, Mark Gartner, Martie Adler, Paulette Pietila, and Toni Super; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and Alena Broxmeyer who held a special place in his life. Forever and always we will remember our sweet and loving Dad.
