Evelyn was born January 31, 1933 to Cornelius and Winnie (Vellenga) DeKrey at the family farm near Pettibone, North Dakota, the sixth of seven children. She was in 4-H for 12 years, receiving many awards for her 4-H work as well as two state awards.  Evelyn graduated from Steele High School in 1951 as Class Valedictorian.  She was the state president for the North Dakota Future Homemakers of America in 1951. She attended North Dakota Agriculture College in Fargo from 1952-1956 graduating with a Home Economics teaching degree. She was a member of the Senior Staff for the President’s Office at the NDAC and sang in the college choir. She was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Upsilon Omicron for over 50 years. She later received continuing education credits from the University of Utah and the University of North Dakota.

She married Lorran Roy Remmich in 1955. They lived in many places: North Dakota, Washington, California and Texas. Three children were born to them – Lisa, Bradley and Keith.  They later divorced.

Evelyn worked at Camp Grassick near Steele for seven summers as the Camp Cook. She taught at a country school for one year. She had teaching jobs in Fargo, Houston, Texas and was a substitute teacher in Linton and Steele.  She was also an outreach worker, Food Services Supervisor and a salesperson. Evelyn worked as a Program Administrator with the nutrition program for the North Dakota Aging Services division from 1971 until she retired in 1999. She received awards for excellence in program performance during her time with the state.

Evelyn enjoyed reading, listening to music and singing. She sang in the Bismarck-Mandan Civic Chorus Christmas concert and in McCabe Methodist Church’s choir. She liked watching old TV show reruns and going out to eat with family and friends. A highlight for her was the Remmich family monthly A & B Pizza gatherings. And she made the best homemade bread and cinnamon rolls anyone ever tasted.

Evelyn fought so hard the past 12 months, facing every hurdle and challenge bravely and courageously.
