Florence grew up on the family farm northeast of Strasburg. She frequently talked about riding her horse to school along the country roads. In fourth grade, she transferred from the country school to attend school in Strasburg. Her dad would give her a ride to school in the truck, but during winter months when travel became difficult, she spent many nights with her Grandma Eva Schlosser who lived in Strasburg. She often reminisced about how grandma would spoil her. The two would share coffee, which was mostly milk and sugar.
Upon graduating from the eighth grade, Florence took on jobs providing care for children of family and friends. As she grew older, she enjoyed socializing at dances and roller skating. It was at a dance in Strasburg where she met the love of her life, Sylvester Meier. Sylvester and Florence married on January 18, 1954, and farmed near Venturia where they raised eight children. In 1984, they sold the farm and moved to Zeeland until September 2006 when they moved to Bismarck. Together they had eight children, 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Florence enjoyed cooking and baking. She was known for her famous Sunday soup, caramel rolls, dumplings and apple juice. She also enjoyed helping others. While living in Zeeland, Florence frequently helped those who needed rides to doctor appointments, hair appointments or just needed someone to visit with. She and Sylvester were also grandparents to many of the town’s children when parents needed a helping hand.
Florence spent her last five years at St. Vincent’s Care Center in Bismarck, where she made many friends and was loved by many. She enjoyed activities, rarely missing a chance to play bingo. She was rather lucky at the game. She used her hard-earned bingo dollars to buy family keepsakes, which were cherished by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whenever you paid Florence a visit, you would not leave empty-handed.
Florence leaves behind her sister, Geneva Vetter; brother, Clarence Feist; children, Larry, Lorena, TX; Char (Karl) Enger, Littleton, CO; Sharon (Myles) Vetter, Bismarck; Ron, Bismarck; Donna (Todd) Thronson, Bismarck; Jane (Rob) Holtz, Fargo; Mike, Portland, OR; and Diann (Mike) Noel, West Fargo; grandchildren, Justin, Derek, Kristopher, Cayla, Chelsey, Kassandra, Robert, Matthew, Jared and Jayme; and great-grandchildren, Jace, Jaxson, Elliott, Eden, Judah, Amelia, Lawrence, Brelynn, Millie, Kashton, Kennedy and Knox.
