Gary was born on Aug. 31, 1941 to Harvey and Anna Plante in Langdon. He grew up on the farm and attended a one room schoolhouse through the eighth grade. In his teens, he worked numerous odd jobs from farming and raising chickens to driving a gravel truck and setting bowling pins by hand. He later moved to Bismarck to attend Beauty School. He was the only male in his class.
In 1960, Gary met the love of his life, Mercedes Alm, and they were married May 13, 1961. During their nearly 50 years of marriage they were blessed with four wonderful children and ten grandchildren. He was a true faithful servant, always putting others before himself. His main devotions were his family, his Catholic faith, and constructing things. Gary had a variety of creative talents and was an entrepreneur, starting up many businesses over the years: Plante’s Parlor of Beauty, Designer’s Fabric center, Years Gone By, Hodge Podge gift store and Plante’s Painting and Drywall. He also designed and built many unique and beautiful homes in Bismarck. You could drive on any street in town and he would say, “Oh, I painted that house and that house… and that one, too.”
Gary created beauty in everything he did. He was a very hard worker and took pleasure in a job well done. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed entertaining guests, collecting cars, landscaping and going to the casino.
He is survived by his mother, Anna Plante; four children, Parnel (Mary) Plante, Bismarck, Parker (Kathy) Plante, Clearwater, Fla., Apryl (Mike) Ghents, Rapid City, S.D., and Anjyl (Monte) Babeck, Bismarck; ten grandchildren, Ashley (Mike), Jessica, Michael, Courtney (Alex), Tyler, Nicolas (Krista), Hunter, Cody, KenaDee and Brooklynn; brothers, Leo Plante, Jim (Lynn) Plante and Ronnie Plante; and sisters, Judy Goetzfried and Penny (Rick) Mutcher.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Mercedes; and father, Harvey Plante.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Bismarck Cancer Center, 500 N 8th St., Bismarck, ND 58501.
