Gaylan Arden Staael, 67, passed away November 11, 2018, at CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck, after a long illness with congestive heart failure. Services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, November 17, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Visitation will be held 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Friday, November 16, at Parkway Funeral Service, where a sharing and remembrance service will begin at 6:00 pm. Burial will be at Pleasantview Cemetery, McKenzie, following fellowship at Parkway. Gaylan was born February 2, 1951, to Julius and Addal (Christianson) Staael at Kenmare, ND. He attended grade school at Kandyohi School and graduated from Kenmare High School in 1969. He attended North Dakota State School of Science, graduating in 1971 with a civil engineering degree. On February 14, 1972, he married Jane Boyd of McKenzie, ND. He worked for the ND Highway Department until 1974 and then was transferred to USDA Soil Conservation Service working in West Fargo and Circle, MT. In 1977, he started working for the North Dakota Health Department until 2006, when he retired due to ill health. Gaylan was always thinking of others and would show this by giving small token gifts. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and going for drives. His faith in God was of most importance to him. Gaylan is survived by his wife, Jane; daughters, Annette, Bismarck, and Gayla, Wing; sister, Evelyn (Jake) Seel, Goodyear, AZ, Jerrol Staael, Kenmare, ND; grandchildren, Ali (Alex) Long, Mandan, Alex Lucier, Mandan, Devin Weltz, Moorhead, MN, Kendra Schill, Bismarck; great-grandchildren, Blake Long and Emery Lucier; brothers-in-law, Randy (Linda) Knudson, West Fargo, Robb Boyd, Scottsdale, AZ, Grant (Kim) Aasand, Great Falls, MT; sisters-in-law, Pat (Hank) Ziegler, Buckeye, AZ, Gwen Kovarik, Minneapolis, MN, Carol (Lyn) McLean, Leavenworth, WA, Elizabeth Widel, Blackwater, MO, Carla (Kim) Rohr, Folsom, CA, Amy (Jim) Jacobson, Mandan; and many nieces and nephews. Gaylan was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Addal; sister, Mardell Mandan; father-in-law, Robert Boyd; niece, Olivia Widel; and brothers-in-law, Roger Knudson and Bob Widel.
