George Volk

February 22, 1953 — January 16, 2019

George Kasmer Volk, the son of Kasmer and Frances (Brossart) Volk, was born on February 22, 1953 in Rugby, North Dakota. He joined the Kingdom of Heaven on January 16, 2019, at his home in Bismarck, after a long, hard fought battle against Parkinson's Disease. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, January 19, at Church of Corpus Christi, 1919 N 2nd St., Bismarck, with Rev. Paul Becker officiating. Family will greet visitors from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Friday, January 18, at the church where a rosary/vigil service will begin at 7:00 pm. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. George was one of eleven children born to Kasmer and Frances. He was raised in Towner, graduating from Towner High School in 1971. George held various jobs with Winger Cheese, Westgate, Inc. and Igoe Ready Mix before settling into his career in the pool building industry. He was a foreman, and eventually became an owner of Associated Pool Builders, Inc. until his retirement in 2014. In 1974, George met the love of his life; his partner in marriage for 41 years, Nancy Haman.  They were married on June 3, 1977 and through their union they were blessed with three children; Timothy George, Eric Christopher, and Sarah Jane. George and Nancy made their home in Bismarck, and relished their summer months at Lake Metigoshe. George was a man of integrity and true grit. He was a hardworking, admirable man who was always willing to help someone out. Those who were blessed to know him will remember him for his quick wit and sense of humor. He always knew how to make us laugh, even when he was struggling with his disease. George adored his children and would do anything for them. He was a proud dad. He truly would go to any length for his kids. Even while away for work, he would find his way home to attend and support them in their activities. Some of their fondest memories will be time spent at the lake; George driving the boat in circles for endless hours for tubing and wakeboarding – never with a complaint; and family outings to Minneapolis for Vikings games, as George was a diehard Vikings fan. For all of their memories, they will be forever grateful. George’s smile was always wide when his grandchildren came into his view. Whether it was sharing yet another ice cream cone, eating s’mores by the fire, carving pumpkins from those he grew in the garden, giving rides on his wheelchair, or just watching them play in the water at the lake, he had such a special bond with each one of them. Even in his final days, though he was suffering, he would put on a smile when his grandkids were visiting him.   Despite George’s diagnosis with PD, he tried his hardest to live his life without limitations. And when his body no longer was able to take him where he wanted, his ever so loving wife was there to do it for him. Nancy was not only George’s love, she was his strength, too. She truly gave George the most patient, selfless and tireless care. Truly theirs is an everlasting love.   Those who will forever be thankful for his time on this earth include his wife, Nancy; his children, Tim Volk; Jamestown, ND; Eric (Sarah) Volk, Bismarck, ND; and Sarah J.
