Gordon Raymond McEvers was born February 23, 1923, to Earl and Mildred (Remington) McEvers on a farm in south of Lignite, North Dakota. Growing up he attended country schools near the family farm. Following the death of his mother in 1940, Gordon remained on their farm to help support the rest of the family as Earl and kids moved into Lignite. Even with the times being very hard, Gordon talked fondly with many memories of his time on the farm along with his friends and neighbors, especially the Monson families.
Gordon married Joy Hermanson on the 28th of December 1945. They first resided in living quarters of the International Harvester business run by Joy’s father Helmer. The business grew and moved and Gordon and Joy built a home in Lignite where they resided until moving to Bismarck.
Gordon worked with the machinery business with his father-in-law while farming. Joy’s brother Keith was Gordon’s best friend and farming partner for many years. They also had an air-crop spraying service. Keith and Gordon also used the planes for one of their passions which was coyote hunting out of the plane. The Lignite bowling alley was another of Gordon’s projects which he worked tirelessly until the closure and sale of the business. Another venture was Keith and Gordy’s grain hauling business which they both enjoyed very much over the years.
Gordon’s many involvements and activities included being a charter member of the Lions Club, Elk’s Club, City Council, Church Council and School Board. Gordon is a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite.
Gordon’s main passion was to make Joy happy and be well-cared for. Farming and cattle, and working with his son Greg, even into his retirement, is what made his life complete. Gordon also loved fishing with his brother-in-law Keith and friends, along with his children. Gordon’s work ethics, positive attitude and good humor were an inspiration to many that knew and worked with him; and if you met him, you loved him.
Gordon and Joy loved to travel. Their many trips included California, Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Arizona. When not traveling out of state, they enjoyed winters in Bismarck and time with family.
Gordon is survived by the love of his life Joy, Bismarck, of almost 73 years; son Greg and wife Karen and their children Kristi (Lee) and son Brennen, Jesse (Fiancé Tracy), Laura (Brandon) and daughters Shelby and Bria; Son Kent and wife Tonia, former wife Christine and their children Rachel (Lonny) and son Dylan and daughter Julia, Sara and son Asa and father Jeff, and Deric (Kerstie) and daughter Kitana and son Raiden; Curt and wife Judith and daughter Meghan (Cameron) and their daughter Ruby; Teresa (Art), and their children Jordan (Fiancé Krissy) and Mason (Meagen) and their daughter Josephine; Tim and wife Shelly and their children Alex, Talyn and Bailee; his sister, Joyce Brooks; brothers, Loren and wife Sharon; Allen and wife Shirley.
