Greg was born on March 31, 1959, in Minneapolis, MN. His family later moved to Dickinson, ND, where Greg spent his school years and met his wife, Deborah Schmaltz, when he was just 16. As high school sweethearts, they married and continued their love story, starting their family soon after. Their marriage was strong and lasted 47 years.
At age 18, Greg started his own contracting business with a $500 loan from his mom and wise words from his mentor, Don Froelich of Dickinson Lumber. Greg was a dreamer—he had an unmatched ability to manifest his visions. His business, Gregory Builders, framed homes for more than 20 years before he and Deborah launched Redford Signature Homes, a team project focused on helping families design their dream homes.
Greg had many passions, including hunting with both firearms and bow. He hunted in Alaska, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, and here in North Dakota. He was proud of his trophies, which included a couple of bears, many large deer, antelope, a bobcat, his bison "Monte," and the moose tag he helped his mother fill a few years ago. His brother, Jeff, did much of his taxidermy work.
Greg also loved fishing and fly fishing. Designing and tying flies with his son, James, was one of his favorite pastimes. Together, they took many memorable fishing trips—from wild ocean adventures in Florida and California to quiet, annual float trips in Montana to celebrate Greg’s birthday.
In 2004, Greg and James even rode their Harley-Davidson motorcycles to California for daughter Mendy’s wedding. Greg invested deeply in his family and his dreams—whether through vacation rentals to host his children and grandchildren in new places, or by designing a family cabin in Montana, which the family uses every year and enjoys sharing with friends.
Greg will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Deborah Luptak; his children, Mendy (Christoph) Thijssen and James (Megan) Luptak; his mother, Donna Luptak; and his siblings, Deborah (Gary) Schmidt, Jeff Luptak, and Tammy (Dean) Weiler. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amalea and Liam; step-grandchildren, Cyril (Abbey) Nagurski and Brooklyn Barnick; and his nieces and nephews, Trevor, Samantha, Nicholas, Ashlee, Hailee, Hanna, Nathan, and Olivia. Many cousins and extended family members, along with Greg’s close friends and co-conspirators—who he proudly called his brothers—will forever miss his funny antics and smart-aleck jokes.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Luptak; his favorite aunt, Betty Palmer; and many other beloved aunts and uncles
