Harold Bruschwein

Harold Frederick Carl Bruschwein, 101, formerly of Wahpeton, died January 8, 2018, at St Gabriel’s in Bismarck. The funeral service will be held Friday, January 12, at 11:30 am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 106 Osage Ave., Bismarck, with Rev. Craig A. Schweitzer officiating. Burial will be held at 2:00 pm Friday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be Thursday, January 11, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 E. Divide Ave., Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Harold was born to August Martin and Sarah (Wiens) Bruschwein April 2, 1916, in Driscoll, ND. He attended North Dakota Agricultural College and graduated in 1938 with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He was a WWII veteran, entering the U.S. Army in 1939 at Fort Lincoln, ND. He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor and served with the 25th Infantry Division in Guadalcanal, where he earned the Silver Star. After WWII he became a teacher serving in many small towns in North Dakota until joining the staff of NDSCS in Wahpeton. At NDSCS he taught Civil Engineering Technology for 23 years until retiring. He married the love of his life, Natalie (Jones), November 23, 1950. He had a witty sense of humor. Everyone enjoyed hearing his stories and seeing his smile. He loved gardening, hunting, fishing and traveling. He was very active at Bethel Lutheran Church, American Legion, VFW, and 40&8. He is survived by Natalie, his wife of 67 years; their children, Dean (Margo), Carla Jones, David; nine grandkids, three great-grandkids; two sisters, Dolores Rosin and Hildreth Grimes; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Hazel Trautman and Lavonne Schumaker; brothers-in-law, John Trautman, Reuben Schumaker, Roland Rosin, and Bill Grimes; and son-in-law, Robert L. Jones. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a local veteran’s organization is requested.
