Hazel Marion Ghylin

September 9, 1923 — October 27, 2018

Hazel Marion Fred Ghylin, 95, Bismarck, died October 27, 2018, at St. Gabriel’s Community, Bismarck. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, November 6, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Rev. Paul Nather officiating. Burial will be held at Regan Cemetery. Hazel was born on September 9, 1923, the daughter of Oscar and Clara (Bickle) Fred at Willow City, ND. She was the youngest of six children. While still a baby, Hazel’s family traveled by train to Bismarck. Her father brought their belongings by wagon and they lived on a farm east of Bismarck. After a short time, the family moved to the Nelson Farm when Hazel was 5. She started school in Wilton, then moved to a farm south of Wilton and when she was 10 to a farm in Painted Woods. As a child she liked to explore the hills of Painted Woods and ride horse. Hazel went to country school in Painted Woods through the eighth grade then to Wilton where she graduated from high school. She took the teacher’s exam and taught at Ghylin School, south of Regan. Hazel met Gerald Ghylin at a teacher’s convention in Bismarck in 1943, and they eloped on December 24, 1943, to Moorhead, MN. She and her husband taught at various schools in North Dakota and moved to the farm in 1961 where she resided until 1994. Gerald died on February 7, 1994. Hazel then moved to Bismarck where she has since lived. Hazel lived through such an interesting time in history; from covered wagons to landing on the moon. From the arrival of electricity on the farm and phone party lines to the internet. Hazel knew the value of hard work and in-the-midst of it, how to have fun. She had a rich live and shared it with love to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, LeAnn (Rudy) Steidl, Bismarck, Gaylen (Penny), Bloomington, MN, Garvan (Marie), Blaine, MN, and Jerome, Bismarck; her 11 grandchildren, Mike (Susan) Steidl, Meade, CO, Jennifer, Sacramento, CA, Mindy (Rick) Smith, Bismarck, Trina (Kevin) Bloemendaal, Edina, MN, Tami (Dave) Pries, Edina, MN, Anjanett (Randy) Schmidt, Tulsa, OK, Kimberly (Mark) Ghylin-Barnhardt, Tulsa, OK, Lisa (Tony Paulson) Ghylin, Zimmerman, MN, Anthony (Amber) Ghylin, Inver Grove Heights, MN, Trevor (Emily) Ghylin, Milwaukee, WI, Jaden (Nicole) Ghylin, Minneapolis, MN; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sons, Al and Giles; her husband of 50 years, Gerald; her five sisters and brothers, Edna, Ed, Ray, Ruby, and Howard; her parents, Oscar and Clara Fred; grandson, Christopher Ghylin; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alvin and May Ghylin; and her brother-in-law, Clair.
