Helen Schatz

August 10, 1936 — November 9, 2019

Helen D. Schatz, 83, Bismarck, was surrounded by family when she was called home to be with our Lord on Saturday, November 9, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 N 4th St, Bismarck with Rev. Lee Herberg and Rev. Gary Olson officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. A prayer service will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Burial will be held on Thursday, November 14, at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Helen was born on August 10, 1936 to Edwin and Esther Zinke in McClusky, ND. She was a graduate of Bismarck High School where Helen met and then married the love of her life, Darryl Schatz in 1953. They lived in Seattle where Darryl was stationed in the Air Force before relocating to their permanent home in Bismarck.

Helen was elected as Burleigh County Treasurer. A few of her accomplishments include receiving the Outstanding Treasurer award by the National Association of County Treasure and Finance Officers. She was on the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee as the Chairman of the National Association of Counties. Helen also served on the Tax & Finance Steering Committee. She served as a Burleigh County Commissioner and on the RC&D council. She was dedicated to fair and efficient government. Helen was very active with Zonta and held an officer position for many years. She served on the City Library Board. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she was a Luther League Advisor with her husband. She held the Treasurer position while on the church council.

Her greatest joy was spending time with and taking care of her family. Her favorite hobbies included cross-stitching, knitting, sewing, needlepoint, and crocheting.

Helen and Darryl loved to travel which took them to Boca Grande, FL, Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Hawaii, China, Australia, Europe, Central America, cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean.

She is survived by her husband, Darryl; children, Marty (Bob) Mazurek, Polson, MT, and Darryl (Caryn) Schatz, Aurora, IL; grandchildren, BJ Mazurek, Missoula, MT, Levi Mazurek, Spokane, WA, Andrea (Brian) Devlin, Polson, MT, Lisa (Jeremy) Hillman, Oswego, IL, and Jacob (Hilary) Schatz, Oswego, IL; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Lucy Michaels, Knox, Whitney, and Griffin Hillman, Cora and JJ Schatz, and Wyatt Devlin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Esther Zinke; brother, Chester Zinke, and sister, Marilyn Hulm.

Memorials can be made to the Bismarck Cancer Center.
