Howard Unterseher

Howard Unterseher, 83, Bismarck, passed away on February 20, 2024. 

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 1, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck, with Rev. Thomas Marcis officiating.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 29, from 5:00-7:00 PM, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.

 Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 4, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with military honors.

He was born in Hazen, North Dakota, on January 22, 1941 and was married to Sylvia Salwei from 1967 to 1984. They had two children.  He was a beloved father to Reed (Roberta Otto) Unterseher, Kimberly (Matt) Puliafico, and a cherished grandfather to Riker, Zach Unterseher and Taylor, Brett, Olivia Puliafico. He is also survived by his sister, Doris Lajoie, and his girlfriend of many years Beverly Anderson. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur & Roseina (Heine) Unterseher, his brother & sister-in-law, Archie & Rosa Unterseher, and his brother Levard Unterseher.

Howard was a dedicated military man and retired with the rank of Sargent Major in the North Dakota National Guard after serving for 30 years. He also earned the Eagle Scout Award (w/ Gold Palm) from the Boys Scouts of America in 1952.

In his professional life, Howard worked as a salesman at Proctor & Gamble and Carnation. He also worked at the North Dakota Department of Transportation. He was a proud alum of Hazen High School 1959, Bismarck Junior College, and Jamestown College.

He dedicated much of his time to volunteering, notably with 23 years at the ND Veteran Cemetery helping to maintain the grounds and for over 30 years at the McQuade Charity Softball tournament for Camp Grassick. Howard was very proud of the accomplishments and awards that he received over the years; Elk of the Year 2019 - Bismarck-Mandan Elks Lodge 1199 and Dakota Zoo’s Eagle Award for volunteering. He was also a lifetime member of the Bismarck Amvets Club.

Sports were always a big part of Howard's life. Football, basketball, track, baseball; through high school, college, and his younger life.  Including being on the 1974 State Champion Fast Pitch Softball team. Howard's faith was important to him and he worshipped at Zion Lutheran Church in Bismarck, ND.
