Jack was born in the family home, the oldest child of John, Jr. and Beatrice (Roth) Dutt. The family was completed when Jack was joined by his younger brother Burl. Jack was educated in Bismarck graduating from Bismarck High in 1946 and then attended Bismarck Junior College. He married Teresa Reis in January 1952 and they celebrated 61 years together before Teresa’s death in 2013. Jack spent most of his career in sales, starting with selling newspapers as a kid, working for Builders Supply Company throughout his adult life and, in retirement, working at Menards. He then worked for the Bismarck Public Schools as an after-school monitor and activities attendant. He formally retired at age 88. Jack served in the North Dakota National Guard retiring with the rank of Master Sargent. Jack was a great lover of the outdoors. He was happy hunting, fishing, boating, water skiing, and sailing. He and Teresa had two summer homes at Lake Tschida which provided great quality family time. They also built and completed five homes during their marriage using only hand tools for construction of the first one. Jack was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 50 years. Jack and Teresa directed much of their energy to Trinity’s youth program chaperoning local activities and national gatherings. Jack also became involved with PTA and served as city wide president. Jack was a great reader of history, especially about World War II and North Dakota. Jack’s greatest joy in life came from family. He was thrilled with everything his grandchildren participated in, and have achieved, and his great-grandchildren brought him immense happiness with their smiles and hugs!

Jack is survived by his daughter Karen and her husband Michael Horan, Bismarck; granddaughter Jennifer Huang and husband Strong and their children Annabelle, Jackson and Olivia of Blaine, Minnesota; grandson Jeffrey Horan and his wife Samantha Kramer and their daughter Ainsley Horan of Bismarck.
