James "Jim" Kratovil

James Raymond Kratovil, born on February 28, 1945, in St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025, in Bismarck, North Dakota. He was 80 years old.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Mary Kratovil, and his sister, Judy Perry. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Heppner Kratovil, who resides in Bismarck, North Dakota; his daughter, Heather Kratovil Magnus of Holly Springs, North Carolina; his son, Tony Kratovil, who lives with his wife Nancy in Traverse City, Michigan and Brad Magnus of Bismarck, North Dakota. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Brad Magnus Jr. of Bismarck, North Dakota; Bethany Magnus of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Joseph Kratovil of Houghton, Michigan; Anthony Kratovil of Las Vegas, Nevada; Nicholas Magnus of Bismarck, North Dakota and Amber Magnus of Montreal, Quebec.

Jim’s life journey began in St. Paul, Minnesota, but he spent his formative years in Livingston, Montana, where he graduated from Park County High School. He continued his education at Montana State University. He then worked for the Northern Pacific Railway and honorably served in the Army and Montana National Guard until 1970. Jim later embarked on a successful career in retail, working for the FW Woolworth company in Billings, Glasgow, and Fort Collins. In 1976, he and Dorothy realized their dream of owning a business, purchasing and operating the Ben Franklin Store in Plentywood, Montana, until 1997. After retiring from retail, Jim and Dorothy moved to Williston, North Dakota, and eventually settled in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Jim was a man of unique character, known for his quick wit and ability to bring laughter to any situation. His stories and anecdotes will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. Whether it was a memorable antelope hunting trip, a road trip to Denver for a Broncos game and golf, or his legendary "Booya" soup and potato dumplings, Jim had a knack for creating lasting memories. His friends and family will always cherish the moments they shared with him, remembering his infectious sense of fun and his genuine warmth. As one friend noted, "Jim was a one-of-a-kind character, always making me smile with his comments. He will be missed.”

A short service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at Eastgate Funeral Service, located at 2302 East Divide Avenue, Bismarck, North Dakota, 58501, at 12:30 PM CST on April 3, 2025. Interment will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, 1825 46th St, Mandan, ND 58554.

In this time of sorrow, may Jim's family and friends find comfort in the memories they shared and the enduring love he bestowed upon them. His legacy of laughter, kindness, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
