James Steven Stamaris, 85, Bismarck, died September 14, 2019 at CHI St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, September 18, 2019, at St. Mary’s Church, 806 E. Broadway Ave., Bismarck with Fr. Jarad Wolf officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Family will greet visitors from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a rosary/vigil service will begin at 7:00 pm.
James Steven was born May 15, 1934, the son of James and Katherine (Robinson) Stamaris. He was raised and educated in Mandan. James Steven graduated from Mandan High School in 1952 as a standout athlete having started varsity sports in the 6th grade.
He played basketball, football and was on the track team setting many records of which some still stand today. He was also proud of being on the 1948 Mandan High School State Championship football team. After graduation, he enlisted to the Navy where he was promoted to Quarter Master 1st Class on the bridge of both the USS Iowa & USS Randolph. While on tour of duty, he was confirmed by the Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Naples, Italy. On May 7, 1957 he married Gladys Boehm, the love of his life. At the same time, he also started his career as a serviceman with 20th Century Sign Company, then sign painter to General Manager and in 1969 he became owner. During his career, he enjoyed the challenges of business, the networking with clients and the many friendships he made along the way. He retired in 2002. James Steven was a kind, humble and grateful man. He was well known for sending out cards to everyone he knew for every event, year after year.
James Steven was a member of many groups and organizations including the American Legion and a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge #1199.
James Steven was an avid reader of books of all kinds, enjoyed crossword puzzles, working out & riding his stationary bike in his man cave but most importantly he enjoyed his family especially family gatherings for birthdays and holidays. He loved reminiscing about the years gone by telling stories capturing the attention of all his family with his life lessons.
James Steven is survived by his wife of 62 years Gladys; his daughter Kelly (George) Mandrick, Irving TX and his son Jeff (Lynda) Stamaris, Bismarck; his grandchildren, Stacey (Tony) Baskerville, Bismarck, Craig Stamaris, Mandan, Abby and Andrew Mandrick, Irving Tx; his great grandchildren, Kenidy and Jaxson. In addition, many nieces, nephews and their familes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers John and Zachary, his sisters Martha, Noni and Mary, his half-brothers Al and Harvey Morrow and half-sister Mable (Morrow) Stamaris.
