JoAnn Marie Blotsky Bachmeier was born September 29, 1932 in Shields, ND to Susie Tischmak and Joseph Blotsky. She went to grade school at Three Butte Country School and then went on to high school in Selfridge, ND. JoAnn and her sister Ramona, got jobs cooking at the school at St. Gertrude’s and it was there at a dance, she met, Edmund (Eddie) Bachmeier, and they were married on November 6, 1951 at St. Gertrude's Church. They made their home on the family farm six miles west of St. Gertrude's, where they raised their family. Together they had seven children, Charles Allan, Roger Dean, Jerry Lee, James Edmund, David John, Jeanette Marie and Kenneth Joseph. Ed and JoAnn suffered the unimaginable loss of six of their children during their lifetime. JoAnn had a deep faith that helped carry her through all the suffering and loss. Joann and Eddie loved to dance, but Joann really loved to Polka. She listened to Polka music every Sunday while making dinner. Everybody loved Eddie and JoAnn’s sausage, and they liked making it for everyone while visiting and enjoying their company. Many family and friends have stories of butchering and brandings at the Bachmeiers’. She even helped cook at Roosevelt School for a few years, she loved seeing the kids every day. JoAnn lost her husband of 53 years in 2004, but she remained in her home on the farm, feeding her chickens and guineas, until she fell and broke her leg in February 2018. She lived for cooking dinner every day for Jimmy, but, she would not eat until everybody came in and if you weren’t there at 12 o’clock to eat she would get very upset and say “I DON’T KNOW WHY I EVEN COOKED IF THEY CAN’T COME AND EAT WHEN IT IS READY”. Grandma’s kitchen was always full. She loved having a houseful of kids playing on the kitchen floor, if you told her you were coming she would make your favorite dish. The grandkids loved to help collect eggs, put the chickens in at night, cruise in the ranger with grandma and even drive her to town!
