John Romanick, 96, Bismarck, ND, formerly of Washburn, ND died peacefully and unexpectedly on June 5, 2018, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, ND. A Requiem Divine Liturgy will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 9, at St’s Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Wilton, ND, with Father George Pruys officiating. A gathering will be held from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm Friday, June 8, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a rosary will begin at 7:00 pm. John requested his body be donated to the UND School of Medicine so burial at the Veterans Cemetery will be held at a later date. John was born on November 22, 1921, in Wilton, ND, the son of Martha (Hruby) and Peter Romanick. On April 3, 1946, John married Barbara Pilgrim in London, England, whom he met while serving in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. After a year in Germany, the couple moved to Boulder, CO, where John continued his education and earned his law degree. He was activated as a 1LT in the US Air Force during the Korean War and stationed in San Antonio, TX. Following his service, John and Barbara then settled in Washburn from 1955-2013. He practiced law and also served for 24 years as the McLean County States Attorney in Washburn. John also served as Washburn’s city auditor for a number of years. John was active in the Washburn American Legion and St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church. He was very proud of his heritage and was able to visit the Ukraine a couple of occasions. He always appreciated when family prepared traditional Ukrainian dishes for various holidays. He built a cabin at Lake Audubon where he enjoyed fishing and spending time with many family members. His family was very important to him and he loved seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren. John is survived by his children, Lesley (John) Phillips, Peter Charles (Sandra) Romanick, Mark (Lolita) Romanick, and Bruce (Roxane) Romanick; twelve grandchildren, Heather(Chris) Lundeen, Brad (Sarah) Phillips, Aaron (Yuko) Romanick, Lindsay (Michael) Presteng, Maria Romanick, Nicholas Romanick, Laurissa (Bailey) Just, Catherine Ann Romanick, Elizabeth Romanick, Gavin Romanick, Peter Romanick, and Mary Grace Romanick; as well as ten great-grandchildren, Conner, Olivia, Logan, Christian, Chloe, Jordan, Abigail, Grace, Andrew, and Alexander; and two sisters, Lorene Kirsch and Marion Sawicki. John was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Barbara; his parents; his brother, William; and an infant son, John. The family requests that donations be sent to Designer Genes of North Dakota, Washburn American Legion, or Washburn Ambulance.
