Joyce Nagel Anderson, 89, Bismarck, passed away August 18, 2022 unexpectedly from pneumonia surrounded by her family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM, Wednesday, August 24, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 1919 N 2nd St, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Tuesday, August 23, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. A rosary vigil service will begin at 7:00 PM.
Joyce was born to Everett and Selvia (Homer) Dutton on September 30, 1932 at a midwife’s house in Mandan, ND. She grew up and attended grade school in Menoken, ND. Education was very important to Joyce. She left home and rented a room in Bismarck to attend Bismarck High School where she graduated in 1950.
While in high school Joyce worked at the Bon Bon Restaurant and Lahr and Lahr Insurance Agency. Her brother Sonny would fly his open cockpit plane to Bismarck and bring her home for the weekends.
Joyce married Theodore Nagel on May 17, 1952, at St. Mary’s Church in Bismarck. Ted was very adventurous and shared with her his strong passion for travel, camping and flying. Ted and Joyce flew on many adventures, including Sunday afternoon flying excursions with the family.
In 1974, Ted was tragically killed in a car accident leaving Joyce behind with their seven children. Joyce was very strong and continued the family vacations and adventures without Ted. Holidays, birthdays and evening meals were always special with her homemade cooking.
Joyce volunteered selflessly at Corpus Christi Church which involved mass, teaching religion, funerals, weddings, confirmation, meals on wheels, baking caramel rolls. Whenever asked where is mom? The reply would be “she’s at church”. Joyce enjoyed being involved in many social activities which included bowling league, golfing, bridge club, bible study, girl scout leader and Catholic Daughters.
In 1983, Joyce started her twenty-six-year career at the Bismarck Tribune. She thought it might be a good idea to start getting paid for her work. She loved her job not only because it was a reason to dress up every day, but because she enjoyed the friendship of her colleagues.
Joyce married Ruben Anderson on July 16, 1993, spending 21 years together before Ruben’s death.
Joyce is survived by her children Deborah (Rielly) Lane, Colorado Springs, CO, Karen (Al) Nagel, Georgetown, TX, Patrick (Sandy) Nagel, Bismarck, David (Kelly) Nagel, Bismarck, Mary (Mike) Rud, Bismarck, Nancy (Greg) Herzenach, Simi Valley, CA, and daughter-in-law Karen (Steven) Nagel.
Her grandchildren Heidi, Bridgit, Andrew, Wendy, Nicole, Eric, Chris, Justin, Casey, Tanner, Parker, Jennifer, Kayla, Kyle, Mitchell, Jesse, Lucas and fourteen great grandchildren. Along with Ruben’s family.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Theodore and Ruben, brother Everett “Sonny” Dutton, son Steven and grandson Scotty.
