Juel Skytland, 93, Bismarck, died December 16, 2017, at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 20 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3rd St. and Ave A, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 19 at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 E. Divide Ave., Bismarck. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Juel was born November 5, 1924, in Fairdale, ND, the son of Andrew and Ragna (Rinnhagen) Skytland. He was raised in Fairdale and graduated high school in Adams, ND, in 1943. Later Juel received his BS from UND in 1952, and his Master’s from the University of Denver in 1972. Juel married Florence Borchelt on November 18, 1967, in Bismarck, ND. The couple had one son, Michael and one daughter, Marlys. Juel served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. His career was in social work, where he worked as a county case worker and director before moving to Bismarck in 1966. In Bismarck, Juel worked for the state of ND as an administrative assistant and member of the state review team. Juel was a member of the VFW, Amvets, American Legion, Elks, Eagles and the Sons of Norway. After retirement in November of 1989, he volunteered at the Senior Center until September of 2012. Juel and Florence won the Ma Werner award for volunteers in February of 2010. Juel is survived by his wife, Florence; his daughter, Marlys (Todd) Matthiesen; son, Michael Skytland; and two grandchildren, Brett Matthiesen and Trinity Matthiesen. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Andy and Norman.
