Julia Mattern, 100, passed away Feb. 19 peacefully in her sleep at St Vincent Home where she lived for the last five years.      

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM, Friday Feb. 24 at Church of Corpus Christi, 1919 N. 2nd St., Bismarck.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:00PM, with a rosary/vigil service starting at 7:00PM, Thursday, Feb 23 at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.

Interment will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Julia was born Julianna on November 8, 1922 on the family farm to Valentine & Mary Eva (Senger) Kelsch. She was raised on the family farm east of Linton, ND. She graduated from the 8th grade.

In June 1945 she moved to San Francisco, CA with her cousins. There she worked in a department store. On June 17, 1946 she married the love of her life, Leo Mattern. They moved to Strasburg, ND where they owned the Mattern Bar & Blueroom. Besides working in the Blueroom she drove the school bus and worked in the Strasburg Nursing Home. She also enjoyed riding horse and going to horse shows. In October 1975 they packed their bags and moved to Bismarck, ND where they worked at the Bank of North Dakota. After retiring from the bank they ran the Midwest Flea Market in Mandan, ND until Leo died in 1997. She still set up at the flea markets for another 10 years.

She was a charter member of the Strasburg VFW auxiliary, St Mary Society, and Catholic Daughters. She was active in the 4-H programs with her daughters. She liked to go to the casino, play cards, bowl, sew and travel. She went on many trips around the USA.

Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren were the love of her life. She is survived by her children, Melinda (Allen) Betz, Carrilee (Jerry) Rohrer, Leo (Patty) Mattern, and Judyann (LeRoy)Mosset; 11 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Kelsch; and sister-in -law, Adeline Godair.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; parents-in-law, Fred (Elizabeth Schumacher) Mattern; brothers, Sam (Theresa) Kelsch, John (Albina) Kelsch; sister Ameila (Leo) Wolf; in­ laws, Doris Kelsch, Elmer (Hilda) Mattern, Betty (Sly) Schumacher, Jim Godair; son-in-law, Bill Belcher and grandson-in-law, Kyle Leidholm.
