Larry Wayne Bohn, 78, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024, surrounded by loved ones in his home in Bismarck. His funny one liners and love of family, hunting and football continued through his final days.
Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, August 22 at Church of St. Anne, 1321 Braman Ave, Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 E Divide Ave, Bismarck, where a rosary/vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.
Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Larry was born on May 19, 1946, in Carson, N.D. to Walter and Julia Hanson Bohn and graduated from Carson High School. He was a decorated disabled U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam with the Big Red One. After the war, Larry married Eva Marie Hartman Bohn on Feb. 17, 1969, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson, N.D. and they had two children, Patrick and April. He earned an associate’s degree from Bismarck State College. He worked as a brakeman for Burlington Northern Railroad in North Dakota and Montana before becoming disabled and facing numerous health challenges throughout his life. In 1989, they moved to Las Vegas, Nev., where Eva launched her 25-year teaching career. In 2018, they returned home to North Dakota.
Larry grew up hunting and fishing with his parents, siblings and nieces and nephews and had many fond memories of annually joining his brothers to hunt pheasant and deer and play pinochle. Larry was always ready to join family for hunting and was looking forward to filling his deer tag this fall.
He will always be remembered for the way he lit up when someone came to visit and for his generosity. Those in need and the grandchildren often benefitted from a “little scratch” in his pocket. The grandchildren will never forget his bedtime stories about scary bears in Yellowstone, the way he sang “newnee newnee” and drew “round and round” on their backs to help them fall asleep. He enjoyed life and his phrase “this is the best ever” was used frequently regarding food and activities and it made others feel good. Larry valued family above all else and took great pride in fulfilling his duties as a dad and grandpa. He emphasized the importance of 'being a man' and instilled qualities of responsibility and integrity in his children and grandchildren from a very young age.
Preceding Larry in death are his parents; five brothers, Stuart, George, Jim, Ronald, and Mick, and one sister, Phyllis Weishahn, mother-in-law and father-in-law John and Josephine Hartman; and brother-in-law, Lawrence Lindgren.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Eva, who cared for him to the very end. He is also survived by two children, four grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren: Pat (Dana) Bohn of Mandan, N.D., and April Bohn of Bismarck; Dr. Meyer (Melanie) Bohn of Marion, Iowa, Alicia (Devon) Laszlo of Bismarck, Kayla (Lewis) Dobitz of Dickinson and Karissa (Paxton) Miller of Dickinson; Aubree and soon to arrive baby Laszlo, and Colson and Kendal Dobitz.
One of 13 children, Larry is also survived by two brothers, Walter (Alma) of Nashville, Tenn. and Bruce of Renfrew, Pa., and four sisters, Peggy (Richard) Neifert of Livermore, Calif., Virginia (Allan) Earsley of Reeder N.D., Gloria (Marvin) Klusmann of New Salem, N.D., Julie (John) Lundstrom of Mandan and sisters-in-law: Kathy Bohn, Jean Bohn and Betty Bohn. He is also survived by Eva’s sisters, Leona Lindgren, St. Cloud, Minn, Karla (Bob) Olheiser, Isle, Minn and Elaine Sleboda (Friend Lyle Bohn), Dickinson.
Larry was deeply appreciative of the support he received from the Veterans Administration, CHI Hospice and his caregivers Kristine and Lena.
