Larry Schmitz

April 7, 1930 — November 14, 2019

C.H. Larry Schmitz, 89, Menoken, passed away on November 14, 2019 peacefully at home with family surrounding him. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 22, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 806 E Broadway, Bismarck.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Thursday, November 21 at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. A rosary/vigil service will begin at 7:00 p.m.

Larry was born in Bismarck to Clarence and Esther (Benz) Schmitz on April 7, 1930. He attended Boyd and Menoken schools and spent his entire life on the family farm/ranch in Menoken. On October 3, 1953 he married Muriel M. Christenson and together they had four children. She passed away in 2005.

Larry enjoyed fishing trips to Canada with his partners-in-crime and always enjoyed a good whiskey water.

Larry’s special friend, Betty Berg, moved to the farm and helped make a comfortable home with him for many years. Together they shared a variety of mutual interests with a very long list of close friends and family. In his later years, he could often times be found enjoying a bite to eat, an iced tea, and socializing at the Little Cottage Café.

His children and grandchildren were always able to make him smile, especially when he saw how happy they were at the farm. He passed on his love of animals and work ethic to his entire family. His legacy will live on in all of them.

Larry was a member of St. Hildegards Catholic Church, the Eagles, Moose, and Elks club. He was also a board member for many organizations.

He is survived by his special friend, Betty Berg; sons, Burton (Sindy), Menoken; David (Linda), Bismarck; daughter, Janeen (Don), Mandan; grandchildren, Brandon (Junko), Karli, Kindra (Jared), Cordell (Abby), Kimberly (Brett), Kayla (Austin), Kyra (Grant); siblings, Rob (Gale), Boulder, CO; and Joanne (Bill) Redmond, Bismarck; and three great-grandchildren, Sophia, Colter, and Natalie; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel; infant son, Joseph; parents; sister and brother-in-law, Ardith and Jack Bement and many dear friends he considered family.
