LaVerne Marie Fettig (Mitzel) was born on August 19, 1942 to Simon and Annie (Gabriel) Mitzel. She grew up on the family farm southeast of Zeeland and graduated from Zeeland Public School in 1960. After graduation, she attended Presentation Catholic College in Aberdeen, SD, where she graduated with a two-year teaching degree. She later finished her four-year degree at the University of Mary in Bismarck.

She married the love of her life, Gene Fettig, on January 5, 1968. They made their home in Bismarck, where they raised their two beautiful daughters, Kim and Michele. She dedicated her life to teaching and educating children for over forty years. She was a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who always looked out for everyone and put their needs above her own. Her family and friends are heartbroken but know that heaven gained another angel. She will be greatly missed.

LaVerne enjoyed and took pride in taking care of her beautiful flowers every summer. She loved making her famous cheesy chips for her grandchildren and camping with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. LaVerne also enjoyed playing Aggravation with her husband and grandchildren, and she loved keeping her mind sharp with a game of Solitaire and Sudoku.

LaVerne is survived by her husband of fifty-two years, Gene; daughters, Kim (Shawn) Messmer, Bismarck, Michele (Sheldon) Harter, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Shaunna (Nolan) LaValley, Fargo, and Shaylin Messmer and her fiancé Levi Sundby, Bismarck, Nathaniel (Mariah) Harter, Almont, and Megan Harter, Bismarck; one great-grandchild, Lexus Harter and a future great-granddaughter due August 15; her sisters, Lucretia (Victor) Feist, Rita (Leo) Mastel; brother-in-law, James Engelhart; sister-in-law, Barbara Clark; brother-in-law, Lester (Judy) Fettig, and sister-in-law, Carole Fettig.
