LeDean Mattis

LeDean W Mattis, 57, died on August 2, 2017 at the Baptist Health Care Center after a lengthy struggle with cryptogenic liver disease.   A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Monday August 7, 2017 at Bismarck Baptist Church, 2211 Laforest Ave, Bismarck.  Burial will be at the ND Veterans Cemetery, Mandan ND at noon. Cremation has taken place. LeDean was born in Eureka, SD on July 15, 1960 to Milton W Mattis (Elgin, ND) and Irene K (Aman) Mattis (Herreid, SD). He attended elementary school in Elgin, ND, Simle Junior High & Century High School, graduating in 1979. He completed an Associate degree in Criminal Justice & Security from Bismarck State College in 1985. Mr. Mattis completed two tours of military service with the Army, first, from April 1981- April 1983 where he served with the HHC 16th Engineer Battalion & HHB 6th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery. He enlisted a second time in October 1985-October 1988 as a Chapel Activities Specialist stationed in Germany.  LeDean held several jobs over the course of his adult life. Among his favorites were driving for FedEx and a taxi driver in Bismarck and Fargo. He was well known for his mastery of maps & addresses and notorious for getting stuck in the winter. He was a member of Bismarck Baptist Church since middle school, actively involved in choir, singing ministries, and ushering. He volunteered for the 1997 Fargo flood and delivered Meals On Wheels. LeDean is survived by his mother, Irene, sisters, Kelly Mattis (Jamestown), Shaylene (Eric) Howard (Lisbon), Nephews, Cole, Dylan, Tristin, and Jaydin Howard. Aunt, Verlene Aman, Mobridge SD; Aunt & Uncle, Glenda & Lloyd Klein (Bismarck). He was preceded in death by his father, Milton, siblings, Debra, Lonnie, and Jacqueline, Grandparents, William & Martha (Reichert) Mattis (Elgin) & Alfred & Katie (Ackerman) Aman (Herreid, SD), and Uncle Ted Aman (Mobridge, SD). LeDean was a practical person. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift for his final expenses, the ND Veterans Cemetery or CHI St Alexius Hospice Program.
