Leona Heilman, 78, of Bismarck, passed away on January 24, 2025, at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, surrounded by her loving family.
Leona (Volk) Heilman’s life was one of deep faith, resilience, and boundless love—a journey that began on a farm north of Drake, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Joe and Julia (Schnellbach) Volk, one of 17 siblings in a hardworking and close-knit family. Growing up on the farm, Leona learned the values that would shape her character: dedication, perseverance, and the importance of family.
Her childhood was a beautiful blend of hard work and simple joys. Surrounded by her brothers and sisters, the home was always filled with laughter, activity, and love—a foundation that would stay with her for the rest of her life. It was in these early years that Leona developed the strength and warmth that would define her as an adult.
After moving to Minot, Leona worked at several restaurants before becoming a CNA/CMA at Edgewood Vista in Bismarck. There, she became known for her tireless work ethic, compassion, and welcoming spirit. She faced every challenge with the same grace and determination she had learned on the farm.
At 19, Leona married the love of her life, Larry Heilman, on February 12, 1966, in Karlsruhe, ND. Together, they built a family and raised five children: Terry, Lora, Jodi, Jeremy, and Tanya. Tragically, Larry and three of their children passed away far too soon, leaving a deep void in her heart. Yet, through all the heartache, Leona remained a rock—a woman of unshakable faith who poured love into raising her two remaining daughters, Jodi and Tanya. She instilled in them a love for the Lord and a deep resilience that would carry them through life’s challenges.
Her home was always a haven—a place where warmth and love thrived, a reflection of her nurturing spirit. Leona’s legacy stretches beyond her immediate family, as she touched the lives of many with her strength and kindness. She leaves behind her daughters, Jodi (Kelly) Unger and Tanya Heilman, and eight grandchildren: Travis Heilman, Randy and Ryan Holden, Chantel and Tyler (Carly) Unger, Abby (Ethan) Monahan, Katie Heilman, and Noah Heilman.
Leona also leaves behind ten great-grandchildren: Landon, Rylee, Braydon, Kamdyn, Karter, Eli, Annabelle, Silas, Mila, and Legend—all of whom carry forward her spirit of love and perseverance. Leona is also survived by her beloved siblings: Alice Bachmeier, Betty (August) Bachmeier, Janice Parsons, Arlene (Jim) Klein, Judy Prom, Lucille (Dan) Hegney, Joe (Clarice) Volk, Lenora (Bob) Johnson, Alvina (Kenneth) Hegney, Ralph (Marilyn) Volk, and Ron (Tami) Volk. They cherish the memories of their dear sister and will forever hold her in their hearts. She is now reunited with her parents Joe and Julia Volk, her husband Larry, her sons Terry and Jeremy, her daughter Lora, and her siblings Irene, Viola, Raymond, Gerald and Anna.
Leona's faith was the bedrock of her life, and she took comfort in knowing that her earthly journey was part of a divine plan. While her passing leaves an irreplaceable void, her family and friends find solace in the knowledge that she is now at peace, embraced by the Lord and reunited with those she loved most.
Leona’s love, strength, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire and uplift all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though we will miss her dearly, her legacy of love will endure in our hearts forever.
