Lewis was born on May 1, 1931 to Louis and Albina Subart. He joined one brother and three sisters. He lived with his brother while in high school and was active in numerous sports. He was an avid card player and loved playing and watching basketball. He would walk the train tracks from the farm to Robinson so he could play basketball. Lewis sat many hours after a game with his feet in a bucket of ice to take the swelling out of his ankles. He played in three state tournaments during his high school career and was named to the all-state team twice: in 1948 and 1949. The 1948 team placed fourth in the State Tournament at Valley City. Lewis graduated from Robinson High School in 1949 and farmed and ranched with his brother, Hubert.
On November 8, 1953, Lewis married Bonnie Madson at Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson. Together they made their home west of Robinson. To this union, four children were born: Lyla, Denise, Darwin and Kevin. Whenever he talked to the great-grandkids, he always told them to shoot for the square on the basketball hoop cause the ball will always fall into the hoop every time.
Lewis is survived by his children Lyla (Roger) Fevold, Gillette, WY; Denise Subart, Bismarck, ND; Darwin (Jackie) Subart, Aurora, CO; and Kevin Subart, Gibbon, MN; grandchildren, Ryan (Whitney) Fevold, Gillette WY; McKenzie Subart, Washington DC, Brady Subart, Lubbock, TX, Casadee Subart, Basalt, CO, and great-grandchildren Leighton, Avery and Landree Fevold, Gillette, WY; nephew, Owen (Alice) Subart, Bismarck, ND, Robert (Rosemary) Hanson, Wing, ND and niece, Angela (David) Fleckenstein, Bismarck, ND; brother-in-law, Monroe, (Nancy) Madson, Bismarck, ND.
