Lois Engler, 96, Bismarck, died September 1, 2017, at Sanford Health, Bismarck. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Monday, September 18, at the United Church of Christ, Bismarck, 1200 E Highland Acres Rd, Bismarck, with Rev. Gretchen Deeg officiating. Burial will be held at the Nystrom Cemetery, New Rockford. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Cremation has taken place. Lois was born July 18, 1921, to A. H. “Hugh” and Ida (Nyman) Nystrom, at New Rockford, ND. She attended school in rural Eddy County and New Rockford High School. She was a graduate Gogebic Junior College (Ironwood, MT), the University of North Dakota, and the University of Wisconsin Library School. Lois married Paul Engler in Colorado Springs, CO. She was a school librarian and teacher in Oklee, Fertile, and Park Rapids, MN, school librarian in Rock Springs, WY, and hospital librarian at Fort Carson, CO. She also taught at Devils Lake Junior High School. In 1955 she started the library at Bismarck Junior College (now Bismarck State College) where she remained until her retirement in 1985. Lois was a member of the American Library Association, the North Dakota Library Association, the Bismarck-Mandan Library Association, Zonta International, the American Association of University Women, Three Crowns American-Swedish Association, and the United Church of Christ. She held various positions in these organizations. Lois is survived by her son, Eric Engler, Coon Rapids, MN; her sister, Norma (Dean) Dahl, Anoka, MN; nephew, Rob (Elizabeth) Dahl, Cook, MN, and niece, Karen (Mike) Hermanson, Anoka, MN. Memorials may be given to the Bismarck State College Foundation Library Fund.
