Lori Ann Hayes

Lori Ann (Oswald) Hayes, 61, Bismarck, died peacefully January 24, 2019, at home. A celebration of Lori’s life will take place on Saturday, February 2, 2019, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, ND. Lori was born July 21, 1957, in Yankton, South Dakota, the daughter of Duane and LaVilla (Barkl) Oswald. Lori and her family lived in Yankton, South Dakota, Pocatello, Idaho, and moved to Bismarck in 1968. Lori graduated from Bismarck High School in 1975. Lori worked as a legal assistant in Bismarck, then in the Summer of 1984, she moved to Orange County, California with her dad. There, she met and married the love of her life, Don Hayes. Lori met Don at West County Tire, when her dad wandered in as a retired tire salesman and was hired to join the crew. Don and Duane struck up an immediate friendship, and Duane introduced Don to Lori. Lori and Don were married one year to the day after their first date, on December 14, 1986. Lori and Don were a match made in heaven, meant to be! Lori and Don moved from California to Lake Havasu City, Arizona in 1991, where they lived and raced dirt track stock cars. Lori and Don enjoyed many racing adventures. Lori was not only a member of Don’s pit crew, but she helped build the engines, suspensions and every aspect of the cars. Lori was known as “Mrs. Pirate” at the race track, and was even known to get behind the wheel of the race car from time to time. In 1999, Lori and Don moved to St. George, Utah. There, they became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 2003. Lori enjoyed teaching Sunday School and working with the Young Women’s Group. One of Lori’s greatest joys was watching her girls transform into young women. In the Summer of 2011, Lori and Don moved to Bismarck to be closer to family.   Lori had a love for music. After just a few piano lessons, she could play any song by ear, and also taught herself to play guitar. As a teenager, she and her friends enjoyed playing piano and singing. Her love of music continued throughout her life. Lori is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Don, her son, Josh (Les) Fowler, her mother Lavilla Lutz, her sister, Karen James, her sister and brother-in-law, Lynette and Dustin Dahl, and nephews and nieces, Becky Jones, Devin Felix, Sara James, Jade Saubert, Sierra Vannett, Izzy Dahl, and many other loved and cherished family members. Lori was preceded in death by her father, Duane Oswald; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Don and Mary Jane Hayes.
