Lorraine was born September 4, 1930 in Glen Ullin, ND to Paul & Rose (Hertz) Fitterer. She attended a country school a few miles from their farm, near Lake Tschida, 18 miles south of Glen Ullin and graduated from 8th grade. She grew up as a child in the Great Depression years, learning to be resourceful, hardworking, and self-sufficient.
It was at a roller-skating rink, while taking lessons from him, where she met the love of her life and future husband Paul Steckler. They were married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 15 miles SE of Glen Ullin on June 12, 1951. They made their home in Glen Ullin until moving to Hazelton, ND in 1958. In 1971 the family moved to Wilton, ND. They were blessed with 5 children and shared 69 years of marriage together. Lorraine was a Domestic Engineer until retiring in 1995. She was a member of Altar Society & Christian Mothers at St. Paul’s & Sacred Heart Churches in Hazelton & Wilton. They moved to Edgewood Vista in Bismarck in 2015. Paul passed away in November of 2020. In October of 2021 she moved to St. Gabriel’s Benedictine Living Community.
Lorraine was known for her excellent German heritage cooking; Kuchens, Knoephla & Borscht soups, Kasespatzle (cheese buttons), Strudel, Schupfnudeln (rolling noodles), Blagenda, & Caramel Rolls. She loved to dance to old time music, Waltz, Polka, & Schottische. Dearest to her were her Family, her Home, her Catholic Faith, and many Friends. You never left her home without receiving a Goodie Bag.
Lorraine is survived by her children Charmaine Steckler, Charles (Jeanie) Steckler, Calvin (Sandra) Steckler, Carla (Paul) Olson, and Carmen (Scott) Zeien; 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her parents Paul and Rose, sisters Agnes (Joe) Schaaf, Germaine Lewis, & brother Gerald (Sally) Fitterer.
