Margaret “Peggy” Haakenson, 87, Bismarck, died May 8, 2019, at CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck.
Services will be held at 10:30 am Monday, May 13, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Sunday, May 12, at Parkway Funeral Service.
Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Margaret Anne was born December 2, 1931, in Fargo, ND, the daughter of Carl and Goldie Ilene (Barnes) Houkom. She worked with her family on their dairy farm and market garden. Peggy graduated from West Fargo High School in 1949 and worked at a bank, and then at the ASC Office. She married Eugene Haakenson on February 13, 1954, at Fargo, ND. The couple lived in the Bismarck area on a farm where they raised their family. Peggy had a gentle touch, caring for baby lambs and calves. She enjoyed gardening to feed her family.
Peggy was musically gifted, enjoying singing and playing piano with her family and friends. She professed to follow Jesus when she was 18 years old and remained faithful to her vow all her life.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 65 years, Eugene; five children: James (Julie), Cleveland, ND; Wesley (Brenda), Belgrade, MT; Paul, Utica, SD; Anne (Eric) Kummer, Williston, ND; and Steven (Anita), Parshall, ND; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren: two sisters and two brothers, Helen Forbes, Happy Camp, CA; Patty (Roger) Byers, Whitewood, SD; Irvin (Hazel) Houkom, Detroit Lakes, MN; and Bob (Marianne) Houkom, Iowa City, IA; many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her loving ways.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Carl and Doug.
