Marvin Leo Tarnasky

March 19, 1928 — December 16, 2018

Marvin L. Tarnasky, 90, Bismarck, died December 16, 2018, at Sanford Health, Bismarck.

Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, December 21, at First Baptist Church, 306 E. Divide Ave., Bismarck.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial is at 1:00 pm Friday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Marvin Leo Tarnasky was born March 19, 1928, at Lehr, ND, the son of Michael and Mathilda (Kramlich) Tarnasky. He was raised and educated at Lehr and later moved to Streeter, ND, to help area residents with their farming. Marvin married Mathilda Grenz on October 26, 1947, near Gackle, ND. The couple moved to Jamestown, ND, in 1948, where Marvin worked in construction and was employed with Midwest Motors and M & H Gas Station. He was inducted into the Army on January 10, 1952. Marvin received his basic training in Ft. Lee, VA, and then was sent to Germany for 18 months as a supply handler. He was honorably discharged on December 15, 1953. Marvin and Tillie moved to Bismarck in 1956, where he was employed as a landscaper for Ray’s Lawn Service for 16 years and worked for Kinnischtzke Nursey. He worked in the forestry division for the city of Bismarck from 1975 to 1990. Following retirement, Marvin was a self-employed lawn care provider.

Marvin was a member of First Baptist Church, the VFW, and the Amvets. Two years ago, he was able to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.   Marvin enjoyed bowling, horseshoe pitching, and playing pool. He especially loved time in the garden, growing flowers and doing his yardwork. In 2009, Marvin was inducted into the ND Horseshoe Hall of Fame and was a member of the ND Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association.

Marvin will be deeply missed by his two brothers and one sister-in-law, Reuben Tarnasky and Elmer (Adeline) Tarnasky, all of Fargo, ND; his sister, Idella Tarnasky, Wishek; and many nieces, nephews, and good friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Mathilda, who died on February 28, 2009; his brother, Walter; and his sister Esther.
