Mary Homsey Schuler passed away on Sunday May 14th, 2023 at home with her daughters at her side.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, May 25, 2023 at St. Georges Episcopal Church, 601 N 4th St, Bismarck. Visitation with family will begin at 10:00 AM.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Mary Homsey was born July 29th, 1950, to Freda and Ahethophal “Toby” Homsey in Bismarck North Dakota. In 1955 her father, a contractor, built a family home in a newly developing neighborhood, Highland Acres. Mary would end up living in this home her whole life and raising her own family in it.
Mary graduated high school in 1968 from Bismarck High School. After a brief stint at Bismarck Junior College trying her hand at computers, she decided it wasn’t for her and went into the family business of hairdressing. She graduated from Joseph’s School of Hair design in Bismarck in 1970 and went to work for her mother in the Swirl & Curl Salon in Bismarck. She eventually left her mother’s salon and went to work at Regis Salon inside of JC Penny’s in Bismarck. She worked there up until the mid 80’s.
In 1984 she married Harold Schuler. After a famous North Dakota spring blizzard on April 28th 1984, the couple was finally able to get married on April 29th. The couple resided in Bismarck and Mary became a stay-at-home mom to raise the couple’s two children Janel and Jennifer.
Mary continued to be a homemaker for many years while also helping to do the bookkeeping for her husband’s trucking company. After her children were in school, she eventually went back into the work force doing things that would accommodate her family’s busy life. Some things she did were noon supervisor for Bismarck Public Schools, Sterile technician for an orthodontist office, back behind the chair cutting hair, and eventually doing retail for salon supply stores.
After leaving the workforce Mary kept herself busy in so many ways. She tended to her garden, yard, and house, harassed (in the most loving way possible) her adult kids, had the opportunity to be a grandma, and most importantly sitting on her patio enjoying a beer. Summer was her favorite time of year, and she enjoyed spending as much time in the sun as possible.
She is survived by her daughters, Janel (Kasey Welch) and Jennifer (Andrew Amundson) and her two granddaughters, Charlie and Dylan Welch, whom she liked better than her own daughters (just kidding mom, don’t haunt us).
She was proceeded in death by her, husband Harold; her mother, Freda; her father, Ahethophal; mother-in-law, Ella Schuler and father-in-law, Herb Schuler.
Her daughters would like to thank the Sanford Oncology team for their expertise and support through everything, Visiting Angels, Mary’s friends and family for coming to spend time with her, and countless neighbors who we owe a million favors to. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your support, we would not have made it very far without you.
In lieu of flowers consider a donation in Mary’s name to St. George’s Episcopal Church, or Martin Luther Elementary School.
