Mathias "Matt" Schaff

Mathias “Matt” A. Schaff, 97, Glen Ullin, passed away on Thursday,  December 12, at the Marian Manor Health Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. central time on Friday, December 20, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with Father Jeffrey Zwack officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin. A rosary/vigil will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Burial will be held at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Glen Ullin.

Matt was born February 24, 1922 in Ryegate, MT to Adam and Veronica (Emter).  He moved with his family in 1925 to the St. Joseph area south of Glen Ullin and attended school in Grant county. He married Pauline Erhart on November 6, 1945 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin.  They farmed in the St. Joe area from 1945 through 1982.  At that time, they moved into the town of Glen Ullin.  In January 2014 Matt moved to Marian Manor Estate apartments. In his last days, he was a resident of Marian Manor Health Care. 

In younger days, Matt enjoyed bowling and dancing. His favorite pastime for many years was fishing. He also had a passion for cards and was playing pinochle until his last day.  Matt’s greatest joy was his family and spending time with them, especially over the holidays.  As a father and grandfather, we were truly blessed. His faith and belief in God were  key elements in his life. He was a member of St. Joe’s Men Society, Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Matt is survived by his daughter, Susan (Marc); son, Scott; granddaughter, Shawna (Mike); and two great grandchildren, Nicholas and Isabelle. He is also survived by his brothers, Mike (Ellen) and Dominic (Cyndy); sisters, Florentine Malisbury and Eva Francisco; sister-in-law, Sally Schaff.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; his brothers Andrew, Leo, and Lawrence; infant brother, Anthony; sisters, Ann Hellman, Betty Hopfauf, Margaret Fitterer, and Rose Francisco.
