Mavis Bell Anderson

March 1, 1936 — February 18, 2023

Mavis B. Anderson, 86, Bismarck, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Sanford Hospital.  Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 15, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 N 4th St., Bismarck, ND.

Mavis was born in Rugby, on March 1, 1936, the daughter of Raymond and Gladys (Bell) Greany. She was raised and educated in Rugby and graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Rugby High School. Mavis then attended Minot College of Nursing for a short time, before starting her family and raising her four children, Kirk, Kim, Joni and Barb. The family lived in Pleasant Lake, ND and Rugby. She went to work for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), starting in Rugby and then in Minot, before returning to Rugby and was named the County Director for ASCS. Eventually, she moved to Bismarck in the same capacity as County Director for Morton County, where she worked until retiring in the late 1990’s.

Golfing at Mandan Municipal, was where Mavis could be found most days when she wasn’t wintering and golfing in Florida. Mavis was an avid seamstress, sewing all her kids clothes when they were growing up.  Her love for sewing continued and grew into embroidery, quilting and knitting.  Her sewing room is full of projects finished and yet to be completed. She also enjoyed exercising, shopping and going to garage sales.

She is survived by her children, Kirk Anderson, CO, Kim (Kimberly) Anderson, Idaho, Joni (Tim) Glass, Bismarck and Barb (Kevin) Costello, Champlin, MN; grandchildren, Kristie (Matt) Powell, Ben Anderson, Nick (Katie) Anderson, Steven Anderson, Jake (Miranda) Glass, Jill (Brennan) Doan, Chad Costello and Jade Costello; six great-grandchildren and special friend Norval Pidarson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Virgil Greany, who died serving in the Viet Nam War.
