Maxine was born August 17, 1933, at Bismarck Hospital to Henry Dietrich and Wilhelmina “Minnie” Margarita (Albers) Meyer. She attended the country school (grades 1-3) one mile from the family farm near Hannover, ND, and then attended St. Peter’s Lutheran School in Hannover (grades 4-8). She stayed at Mary Henke’s home and commuted home on weekends. Maxine was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She graduated from New Salem High School and was valedictorian of the class of 1951. She went on to graduate from Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing in 1954 and was employed as an RN for 44 years. Her nursing career started at Bismarck and later Mandan Hospitals followed by serving as Dr. Riisager’s office nurse. She continued nursing at ND State Penitentiary, ND Youth Correctional Center, and was the director and instructor of the Medical Assistant Program at Interstate Business College. IBC named Maxine Employee of the Year in 1990. After retirement in 1998, Maxine taught courses and volunteered with Health Ministry through St. Alexius.
Maxine was married to James F. Fleck, April 20, 1955. They lived their lives together in Mandan for 61 years. In addition to her dedicated career that she loved as a nurse, Maxine was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mandan, was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts, belonged to League of Women Voters, Zonta Club, AAMA (American Association of Medical Associates), Mandan Senior Kiwanis, and LWML at Messiah Lutheran Church. She especially enjoyed volunteering as a teacher’s aide at Immanuel Christian School in Mandan. After retirement Maxine and Jim traveled by bus tours and car trips to all 50 US states and all but one Canadian Province. She enjoyed attending grandchildren’s activities, camping, playing cards, coffee with friends, embroidery, and ALWAYS reading a book! Maxine was supported by a loving community of friends following Jim’s passing in 2016. She expressed her thankfulness many times for the blessings of all her neighbors and friends for their love, help, and devoted friendship. Maxine was an avid reader and the help and service she received from Morton Mandan Public Library was her life line.
