Michael Anthony Kuntz, 59, died instantly when being struck by a vehicle operated by an impaired driver, while walking his dogs near his home in Dayton, Nevada on August 15th.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 pm Friday, September 27, at Church of St. Mary, 806 E. Broadway Ave., Bismarck.
Family will greet visitors starting at 6:00 pm Thursday, September 26, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a rosary/vigil service will begin at 7:00 pm.
Michael was born in Bismarck, ND to Michael A. and Martha M. Kuntz on March 15th of 1960,
the fifth of seven children. He grew up in Bismarck, attended St. Mary’s Elementary for 8 years
and St. Mary’s High School, graduating in May 1978. Michael began his career as a corrections officer at the State Penitentiary in Bismarck where he worked for several years. On Dec. 30, 1990, Michael became a correctional officer at the federal facility in Oxford, WI. From there he went on to work at other facilities in Rochester, MN; Florence, CO; and Cumberland, MD. He served as Lieutenant at FCC Florence from April 28, 1996 to May 22, 2010. He retired with the rank of lieutenant from FCI Cumberland, MD on October 31, 2012.
After retirement, Michael moved to Dayton, NV to be near Lake Tahoe where he had vacationed many times over the years and grew to like the area very much. Mike’s hobbies included hunting and fishing, but, most of all, playing with his dogs. He spent many hours moving dirt and rocks by hand to create a playground for his five Whippets (his girls) in the huge back yard where he lived. He also allowed a large family of cottontail rabbits to take up residence under the storage shed in the yard so his pets would have live game to chase. It is with sad irony that his girls should all perish with him as they were enjoying their daily morning walk together.
He is survived by his mother Martha, his brothers, David and Ronald, as well as sisters Colleen Martin, Marcia Schneider, and Cheryl Kuntz, and very special friend Lisa Braren.
Michael is preceded in death by his father, Michael, and older brother Denis.
