Monica Anne Swanberg, 91, died peacefully in her sleep on March 6, 2025.
Monica was born Nov. 4, 1933, the middle daughter of Constance and John Chesire. Monica grew up in Bismarck with her sisters Margaret and Clare. She attended Cathedral, and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. She then attended Bismarck Junior College, later graduating from Mary College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology. She worked her entire career as a Medical Technologist at St. Alexius Hospital.
Monica married the love of her life and best friend, Ron Swanberg in April of 1954. After a few years living at the Swanberg family farm south of Mandan, they raised their three children, Peggy, John, and Mike at their home in Bismarck. Monica and Ron made their home a welcoming & fun gathering spot for friends and family. Ron and Monica also spent a lot of time in Bismarck at the softball diamonds, where they sponsored coached/managed the Swanberg Plumbing & Heating Softball team for many years. They both loved sports and were avid fans of the Minnesota Twins & the Minnesota Vikings. They both enjoyed many trips together to Florida, Phoenix, and with their extended family at Rainbow Resort in Minnesota for over 25years. Ron & Monica spent almost 67 happy years together before his passing in 2021. Monica was proud of her Irish heritage, loved reading, gardening, and treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren and great children.
Monica is survived by her children Peggy Riedinger, John (Barbara) Swanberg and Mike (Judi) Swanberg and her grandchildren Becky Riedinger, Mark (Heather) Riedinger and Jennie Riedinger; Erin (Daniel) Gray, Kelly (Roberto) Gameiro, Brian Swanberg; Ryan (Nichole) Wold and Brittni (James) Crager; and great grandchildren, Evelynn and Damien Riedinger, Iris Gray, Gus and Leo Gameiro, and Kason, Camryn & Rylee Crager. She is also survived by her in-laws, Art and Jean Swanberg, as well as many nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ron Swanberg, her parents Connie & John Chesire. Her sisters Margaret Slogar and Clare Williams. Her brothers-in-law Larry Swanberg, Bill Slogar and Wes Sommerfeld and her sister-in-law June Sommerfeld.
The funeral will be on Saturday, March 22nd at 1PM with a reception to follow at Parkway Funeral Service at 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, ND 58503. A service livestream will be available on the funeral home’s website. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan on Monday March 24th at 10AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations made to The Bismarck Emergency Food Pantry where Monica spent several years as a volunteer.
