Peter J. Fleckenstein, 83, Bismarck, passed away on Friday, September 20, at CHI St. Alexius Health, Bismarck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, September 25, 10:00 AM, at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, 1825 S 3rd St, Bismarck, with Monsignor Jim Braaten officiating.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 24, from 5:00-7:00 with a prayer service starting at 7:00 pm Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.
Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck.
Peter was born on May 21, 1936, the son of Paul and Ottilia Fleckenstein. He was raised on a farm SW of Dodge, ND where he attended country elementary school and graduated from Assumption Abby High School in 1955. He married Lucy Christensen on September 19, 1998. Peter worked at several different jobs throughout his life and settled in at the Bismarck Municipal Airport where he was employed for 34 years and 15 of those years as a master mechanic. While employed at the airport Peter designed and custom-built snow blades for the airport snowplows, which were later adopted and incorporated at the state level. While Peter was proud of his contribution, he never sought to patent or seek credit, he just wanted to help where there was a need. Peter was a licensed pilot for 28 years and flew as a hobby.
Peter was a proud and active member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, which showed in the fact that he had an excess of 500 stands while a Sir Knight. Throughout the years, he held the positions of Faithful Navigator, Trustee, and received many state recognitions as Sir Knight.
Peter was always known for his mechanical abilities and willingness to help family and friends.
Peter is survived by his wife, Lucy, Bismarck; his children, Terry (Laura) Fleckenstein, Bloomington, IN, Sherry (Dave) Meyer, Bismarck, Shelly (Darren) Hegel, Bismarck; Jeremy (LaDawna) Fleckenstein, Sacramento, CA; daughter-in-law, Mary (Paul) Gapinski, Brighton, CO; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his siblings, Leo Fleckenstein, Larry (Judy) Fleckenstein, and Paula Schmidt, all of Bismarck; sisters-in-law, Kathy Fleckenstein, La Crosse, WI, Gerri Fleckenstein, Mandan, and Rita Zimmer, Atlanta, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Tim; his sisters, Eva (Simon) Sheett, Rose (John) Klein, and Theresa Schmidt; his brothers, Anton, August and Paul Fleckenstein; and his parents.
