Phyllis Hazel Williams was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on December 3, 1935, to Genevieve and Robert Williams. She was the youngest of five children, joining her eldest sister, Marian, brother, Gayle, and sisters, Janice and Adrienne.
Phyllis spent her childhood in Grand Forks when, in her words, it was small enough that she could walk anywhere she wanted to go. She graduated from Central high school in 1954 and got her degree as a registered nurse at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks in 1958. Her first job as a nurse was at the newly opened Grand Forks Air Force base. Phyllis worked as a nurse for 8 months before entering the ministry in 1959.
Phyllis was in the ministry in North Dakota from 1959 until 1972. At that time, she went to Brazil, and continued in the ministry there for twenty years. In 1992 Phyllis returned to North Dakota to be nearer her aging mother. Phyllis shared the gospel in North Dakota and South Dakota from that time until she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in mid June of 2024.
Phyllis was a happy and contented person. She loved us all. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and helped us enjoy them too. Phyllis always wanted to do everything she was able to do, even as macular degeneration took most of her vision in the last years. Phyllis made it easy for others to help her, happily and thankfully accepting assistance if she needed it.
Phyllis passed away peacefully in hospice care at the Good Samaritan care home on Sunset Drive in Mandan, North Dakota on July 5, 2024. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews and a multitude of beloved friends and coworkers.
