On Saturday, October 17th, 2020, Robert J. (Bob) Weiss achieved his ultimate goal: eternity in Heaven with the God he has loved and worshiped since he was ten years old. Bob was the pastor at First Baptist in Bismarck. He was 62.
We want to keep everyone who loved Bob safe from COVID, so a distanced memorial service is scheduled to celebrate his life. You may livestream at 4 pm, Tuesday October 20, or view the recording afterward via Eastgate Funeral Service website.
Bob was born on February 6th, 1958 in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Harvey and Gerrie (Jelen) Weiss. He attended Bradford High School in Kenosha where he excelled in sports including football, track, wrestling, and gymnastics. After graduation in 1976, he went on to study at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana. During the summer of 1977, Bob rode a bicycle from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Oregon with the Wandering Wheels organization. He graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education.
Bob was a versatile musician, playing trombone, guitar, bass, and singing. But what he really loved was drumming. In 1982-83, Bob toured the US and Canada for nine months with a music ministry called New Day. It was there he met Beth. They were married in 1984, and have included music as part of their ministry ever since.
They welcomed their son, Ben, in 1986. Later that year Bob earned his Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. Since then, Bob has served churches as associate or senior pastor in Corona, CA; Niles, MI; Kyle, TX; Brooklyn Center, MN; Watertown, SD; and Bismarck, ND. He was ordained into Christian ministry in 1992.
Bob loved Jesus first. Next, he loved being a husband and dad. He liked to golf. He enjoyed travel, to the tropics most of all. He both loved and was irritated by the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed Italian food, and eating out was his love language. He was a goofball and cared deeply about people. He had abundant patience with people and practically none with misbehaving technology or furniture assembly.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Gerrie Weiss, and brother-in-law, Terry Giggy. He is survived by his wife, Beth (Wright) Weiss of Bismarck; his son Ben Weiss, of St. Paul, MN; his brother Lee (Gloria) Weiss of Kenosha; his sister, Susie Giggy of Kenosha; nieces Carrie Weiss and Jill (Joey) Jankowski; and nephews Matt (Mandy) Weiss and Steve Giggy; plus great-nephews Ryan, Peter and Luke, and great-nieces, Zoe, Liv and Anne. Beth's family loved him as a brother and son.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Northridge School Ministry of First Baptist, 306 E Divide, Bismarck, ND 58501.
