Sadly, Richard (Dick) Vernon Green passed on Jan. 23, 2025, from natural causes at the age of 97. While he will be missed, Dick lived a long and eventful life. To say he was a character or larger than life would be an understatement.
Born June 4, 1927, Dick was the first son to Marian and Norman Green. The Greens lived in Adams County, Chandler Township, southwest of Mott, North Dakota. Dick’s first bed was a clothes basket that sat on a card table. He attended Chandler grade school until the sixth grade. In the fall 1937, the family moved closer to Mott for continuing education for what was now four boys: Dick, Orrin, Myron and Marion (Babe). Another son, James (Jim), was later born and the family moved to a farm two and half miles southwest of Mott.
Dick graduated from Mott High School in 1945 and worked several jobs in the area, including at Thompson Lumber Company, where he became assistant manager. He met his first wife, Dolores Schatz, and married in 1948. The couple divorced in the seventies.
Moving to the “big city” in 1952, he began working at Bismarck Lumber Company. In Bismarck, Dick attended the local community college to receive a certificate in home construction and supplies management, after which he worked on projects for many houses in the city. In 1964 the couple welcomed son, David, who preceded Dick in death in 2022.
In the late sixties, Dick moved on to become superintendent of the Bismarck Public Works until retirement. Dick married Roberta Peterson in September 1998 and remained with her until her passing May 5, 2023.
Active in community organizations and events, Dick participated with the Bismarck Shriners, joining the Bismarck El Zagal Oilers, getting involved in parades and helping at fundraisers. He also donated his time to the Bismarck Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament and Bismarck Zoo.
A very good player, he loved to shoot pool and would consistently pocket nearly everything.
Dick leaves one surviving brother, Jim Green; daughter-in-law, Renee Cole; stepsons, Ron and Greg Peterson; and stepdaughter, Diana Peppard, and all their families.
Dick requested no funeral or memorial. If desired, please send a remembrance to a charity of your choice.
