Raisa (always known as Rose) Horst, 98 of Bismarck, formerly of Streeter, North Dakota passed away January 27, 2024. Rose Dockter was born March 18, 1925, on the family homestead, south of Streeter. She was the fifth child born to John F. and Barbara (Schaffer) Dockter.
Rose attended a rural farm school. Even though the kids spoke German, teachers and parents were adamant about them learning English. When she had a family of her own, everyone knew if she was speaking German, it was time to pay attention.
She loved farm life. Her childhood days were spent helping her mom in the garden, doing chores, babysitting for area families, and having fun with her sister Ann at area dances. The Great Depression was in full swing and times were challenging, however her family remained strong and filled their house with love.
Rose met Percy Horst and they were married in Streeter on November 12, 1944. They purchased a farmstead 10 miles northwest of Streeter where she and Percy would spend the next 40 years working and raising their family. Even though her work was not outside the home, it did not come easy. She was never heard to complain. Life was good. Her days were filled with cooking, cleaning, raising chickens, milking cows, canning, sewing, and everything else that needed to be done. Her cooking and baking were second to none. Her Halupsi was always a family favorite. Rose was a meticulous keeper of all things around the house, inside and out and she was very proud of her work and her family.
Rose is survived by three sons, Gary, Glenn (Mary Jean), and Virgil (Judy); nine grandchildren, Scott, Gwendolyn, Shelley, JoDee, Tonya, Shannon, Nicole, Shawntae, and Crystal; and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 77 years, Percy; son, Stanley and his wife, Judy; her mother and father; one sister; and four brothers.
