Sally Oremland, a widow, died peacefully at the age of 89 on May 23, 2018 at Touchmark Senior Living Community in Bismarck, North Dakota. Sally was born in Owatonna, MN on August 16, 1928 to Roses Matthews Anderson and Raymond Anderson. When the family moved to the Washington, DC area, she graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD. Sally started working after high school at the Washington Evening Star but was also attending night classes at Montgomery Junior College in Bethesda, MD, where she met Sheldon, whom she married on July 30, 1949. Sally graduated from Northland State Junior College, Thief River Falls, MN in 1968; before graduating from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in social work. Sally was actively involved with the Girls Scouts, and was a member of the executive staff for the Sakakawea Girl Scout Council. She was known for her Girl Scout camp- outs, especially working with the young women to create a love for books. Sally was passionate about reading, which led to her position at the North Dakota State Library. In that role she created a non-profit reading service for the blind (provided by sub-carrier Prairie Public Radio through donations and volunteer readers) which was the first of its kind in North Dakota. She also created the “Talking Book Service” where volunteers record various books and magazine articles on tape for the visual and physically challenged. She was also an active member of MENSA for decades, and at times even administered tests to potential MENSA candidates. Sally is survived by her sister, Judith Youngstrom Ray; her nephew Philip Butler; and her niece Wendy Butler-Walker. She was preceded in death by her husband Sheldon; her sister Nance Butler; and her niece Pegge Butler. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Bismarck Library Foundation in Sally’s name. [Bismarck Veteran’s Memorial Public Library, 515 N. 5th Street, Bismarck, ND 58501]
