Shirley Iverson Farland, lived a life of kindness and generosity.
A memorial service will take place at Zoar Lutheran Church in Hampden, ND on July 14, 2024 in the afternoon followed by scattering of remains at the Iverson Family plot at Storlie Cemetery, Hampden, ND.
Born into a large family in 1940 at Leeds, ND; Shirley was put up for adoption following the death of her mother in 1944. She came to be a part of the family of Menter and Dorothy Iverson at Hampden, ND. She grew up in a second large extended family and exhibited a selfless attitude that she carried through her 83 years of life.
Following her graduation from Hampden High School, she continued her education at Minot State with a degree in education. Her first teaching assignment was at Bowbells, ND; where she met the strapping handsome Darrell Farland. Shortly after their marriage and the birth of their son Shane, Darrell was severely injured in a motorcycle accident that left him parallelized from the waist down. She became a caretaker of her husband, relocating to Grand Forks, where he could receive care at the UND Rehabilitation Center. During this time, she taught school in Grafton, ND and pursued graduate studies at UND. They relocated to Mandan where Darrell worked in State Government and they raised their son Shane, who survives.
With the dissolution of their marriage, Shirley relocated to the Seattle area and pursued a career in real estate. She moved to Bismarck in the early 2000’s to be close to her son and his family, where she worked in retail with Walmart until retiring a few years ago.
Shirley possessed an innocence throughout life. She was generous to a fault. She was slow to anger and without fail thought the best of others. She loved to read and usually had her ‘nose in a book’.
Among her joys was following her grandson Talen in his athletic pursuits in hockey and track.
Shirley is survived by Shane, his wife Jackie and their son Talen of Bismarck; brothers, Kenneth of Lakota, ND and David of Carnation, WA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard and former husband Darrell.
