Sister Andre Hushka

August 5, 1932 — March 23, 2025

Sister Andre Hushka, a member of Annunciation Monastery, Bismarck, ND, entered eternal life Sunday, March 23, 2025 at St. Vincent’s Care Center.

Visitation at the monastery will be Friday, March 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Annunciation Monastery.

The Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday, March 29 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Annunciation Monastery with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.

Sister Andre (baptized Anna) was born August 5, 1932, in Dickinson, ND, the second of the nine children of Andrew and Eva (Walter) Hushka who farmed near New Hradec, ND. While a high school student at Dickinson’s Model High School, Anna became an aspirant with the Benedictine Sisters of the Annunciation in Bismarck, and continued education at St. Mary’s High School. Sister Andre made monastic profession in 1952 and celebrated her 70th anniversary of monastic profession in 2022. Since March 2022, Sister Andre has resided in the memory care unit at St. Vincent’s.

Loving and lovable, Sister Andre was a warmly caring “second oldest” to her siblings, an involved, prayerful, and generous member of Annunciation Monastery, and friend to many. In them she knew she was loved and she loved them! Kindnesses to Sister Andre often received a return of “God reward you,” often accompanied by a pat on the cheek.

Sister Andre’s ministries included aspects of laundry, housekeeping, sacristy service, and friend-making at St. Alexius Hospital, Mandan, Flasher, and Dickinson convents, as well as Garrison Memorial Hospital, the University of Mary, and Annunciation Monastery. Fond memories of 20 years of home service at the Bishop’s Residence in Bismarck with her friend, Sister Reinhardt, were a highlight in her life.

Thanks to the generosity of both family and friends, Sister Andre made four trips to Europe which included Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland. She also traveled to the Holy Land, as well as to Mexico’s Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica. Sister Andre’s devotion to Mary made her a regular participant in various Marian conferences and trips to different shrines of Mary and saints.

Sister Andre is survived by her sisters Genevieve Franchuk, Regina Roller, Eva Rue, brother, Andrew, nieces and nephews and the Sisters of Annunciation Monastery. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Cecelia, Tillie and Veronica, and brother Alex. Memorials may be made to Annunciation Monastery.
