Theodore "Ted" E. Haibeck

March 31, 1926 — December 23, 2017

Theodore “Ted” E. Haibeck, 91, Ada, MN, formerly of Tuttle, ND, died Saturday, December 23, 2017, at Benedictine Care Community, Ada, MN. Ted was born on March 31, 1926 at Bismarck, ND. He was the son of Andrew and Christina R. (Scott) Haibeck. His dad came from Norway in 1905, was a veteran of WWI, working on the east coast building barracks for the Army. Being a carpenter/contractor builder gave him opportunities to build many homes and farm structures in Steele, ND, area when he returned home. The family lived on the edge of Steele. His mother was a school teacher and served as Kidder County Superintendent of Schools in the early 1920’s. She grew up in Pettibone, ND, area as her father David W. Scott came to this area in 1883 establishing a homestead to raise horses and milk cows. Ted grew up in a family with three other siblings. He was the third child having two older brothers and a younger sister. They had a milk cow and some chickens and raised a garden. Ted would herd cows for a few neighbors in the summer in the ditches along the roads east of town. This way he earned a little money and he also learned to play the harmonica by serenading the animals. At age 14, he worked on a farm north of Steele threshing crops. Ted’s love for farming was engrained in his soul. The Navy drafted him when he graduated from high school in June 1944. The Navy schooled him in diesel engine operation. Ted was on a LST ship with a crew of about 120 hauling supplies around in the south Pacific from island to island. He saw Hawaii and got to Japan and the Panama Canal and even to Germany to tow a big barge back to the US. The adventures were many and returning home in later 1945 was the most wonderful thing. In 1946 his parents moved to Fargo, ND; buying a large brick house on 8th Street South which became their home. Ted and his brothers helped renovate the apartments and rooms into rental units. The wedding bells rang on November 2, 1947, and Adella F. Lang became Ted’s wife. She was from the Tappen, ND, area. They were married at Fargo, ND. They spent 3-4 years here. A daughter Dorella was born in late 1948 and a son Roger was born in 1951. Ted had that ever yearning desire to be a farmer. So back to the plains of ND they went near Dawson and rented a farm for a few years. Then in 1955 a farm was purchased north of Tuttle, ND. A daughter Cynthia was born in early 1955. Ted and Adella gave the children a great place to grow up. Ted so enjoyed working with raising cattle, sheep and crops. Adella passed away in October 1969. Ted later married Martha (Rath) Dalbol on March 9, 1974 at Tuttle. We became a blended family with the three children Martha brought to this union. Ted and Martha continued living and working and enjoying all the aspects of farm life. She passed away in May 2011. As time passed Ted needed caring people to help him. He came to live with his daughter Dorella and Larry in Ada in 2013. Leaving his beloved farm was very hard but visits were always dearly enjoyed. We will all miss you for that twinkle in your eye and hearty embracing hug with words of I love you! He was a man with a quiet steady faith who worked hard, loved and provided for his family, told wonderful stories, and despite hardships lived a good life and saw the Sunnyside. Family meant so much to him! Ted is survived by two daughters, Dorella (Larry) Lelm, Ada, MN; Cynthia (Chris) Sarles, Gillette, WY; Martha’s children: Robert (Renea) Dalbol, Jamestown, ND; Ladora (George) Schuessler, Berthold, ND; Margaret (Lyle) Buchmann, McClusky, ND. Also 5 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Adella and Martha; his son, Roger Haibeck; two brothers, David and Jeryl and sister, Rachel Benson. Memorials may be given to Benedictine Living Community of Ada, MN; Hospice of the Red River Valley, Fargo, ND or any charity of your choice.
