August 21, 1940 — July 19, 2019

Verdun K. Schauer, 78, of Sterling and Bismarck, passed away on July 19, 2019, at the Baptist Health Care Center.

Services will be held at McCabe United Methodist Church, 1030 N 6th St., Bismarck, on Saturday, July 27 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck Orr officiating.

The family will have a time of visiting and sharing from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm Friday, July 26, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Cremation has taken place.

Verdun was born to Adam “Eddie” and Herda Schauer on August 21, 1940, in Bismarck. He graduated from Bismarck High school in 1958 then attended North Dakota Agricultural College and Bismarck Junior College. He married the love of his life, Jacque Jo Olson on January 28, 1959, and together they raised four children. Verdun farmed and ranched south of Sterling where he also dedicated himself to improving the community. He was a founding member of the Sterling Rural Fire Department, Taft Township board member, Burleigh County Farmers Union board member, Burleigh County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service board member, recipient of the Outstanding Young Farmer Award, recipient of the NDSU Outstanding Agriculturist Award, recipient of the Burleigh County Soil Conservation Achievement Award, was on the Advisory Council and member for Capital Electric, Sterling School Board president and board member, BEK Telephone/Communications board director, and member of End of the Trail Horse Club, I-Band Cattle Organization, ND Stockmen's Association, Farm Bureau, Bismarck Elks Lodge and Bismarck Moose Lodge.

Verdun's family would love everyone to remember his tremendous love of family; his fabulous sense of humor; his love for animals; his joy of reading and learning all he could about the world, farming and ranching; his sense of adventure in both his personal life and his work; and most importantly how giving, forgiving, generous, caring, understanding, and loving an individual he was. He never gave up looking at his glass as anything other than half full. He never stopped making sure others were cared for.

His family is comforted knowing he has moved on to a new chapter to ride that next horse, train that next dog, pull that next calf, raise that next crop, embrace his parents, hold his brother's hand, and continue to watch over his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was so proud of them all.

If there was ever any person who figured out the job descriptions of husband, father, and grandfather better than Verdun, we would like to meet them. Thanks for all the great lessons and memories. We love you!

Verdun is survived by his beautiful wife of 60 years, Jacque Schauer; his children Kory (Dave) Hagler, Bismarck, ND; Randall Schauer, Lincoln, ND; Dawn (Ronald) Aberle, Menoken, ND; and Kristie (Jerry) Anderson, Bismarck, ND; grandchildren, Lexi and Kyle Hagler, Jaela Schauer, Adam, Marie, Gabriel and Brooke Aberle and Tanner, Josephine, and Sophie Anderson; his sister, Vonne (William) Kleven, Scottsdale, AZ; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many wonderful friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Herda Schauer; brother, Dennis Schauer; and stepfather, Leo E. Schmidt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Bismarck Parkinson’s Support Group, 1837 North Valley Loop #10, Bismarck, ND 58503.
