Verna Louise Koon was born on August 4, 1926, in Driscoll, to William Elmer and Leona (Tice) Koon. She was the third eldest of seven children; at the age of 12 her father passed away and her mother raised the family on her own. Verna attended 12 years of school in Driscoll and graduated in 1944. On June 5, 1946, she married Harold Hall of Sterling, ND. To this marriage three sons were born, Danny, Wallace, and Bryan. Their marriage lasted 55 years, until Harold passed away on March 21, 2001.
Verna wore many hats throughout her life. She attended college at Valley City, where she obtained her teacher’s license. She taught at various county schools in the Driscoll area, had a bus route where she picked up students in her station wagon, and she was also a postal clerk in Driscoll. She worked as a telephone operator in Driscoll, and she and her sister Elda ran the Driscoll Café. But the job that brought her the most joy was working beside Harold at Hall’s Garage & Gas Station, which they owned and operated for 49 years. In her later years, Verna was a Postmaster and clerk in the neighboring towns of Robinson, Dawson, and Tappen. She would substitute teach at the Driscoll School, and she even subbed at the McKenzie School where she was able to teach with her granddaughter, Danette. She was pleased of the fact that she taught, and substitute taught for seven decades. Verna was so very proud to have lived in Driscoll all of her life except for the last two months.
Holidays were a favorite time of year for Verna. She especially enjoyed the 4th of July celebrations at Driscoll where many of her family and friends would gather for the festivities. Christmas was also special for her as she was able to spend that time with her family which she considered her most treasured gift of all. When her children were younger, and time allowed, the family would take trips to the west coast to visit various family members.
Many family gatherings were held at the Hall house, and Verna was always a gracious hostess, as no one ever left hungry. She was a great cook and baker. Verna thoroughly enjoyed her trips on the Burleigh County senior citizen bus that took her to many senior citizen meetings, bingo parties, and shopping trips to Bismarck. She also enjoyed meeting her friends in town for Bunco games.
Verna will be greatly missed by her children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; siblings; and friends. She is survived by her children, Danny (Vivian), Bowman, ND, Wallace (Neva), Laurel, MT, and Bryan (Kim), Menoken, ND; her grandchildren, Danette (Gene) Loder, Scranton, ND, Lisa (Robert) Candrian, Regent, ND, Walter Hall, Williston, ND, Jacie and Kylar Hall, Menoken, ND; great-grandchildren, Mardi Loder, Jonah and Caleb Candrian; sister, Elda Adams; sister-in-law, Willie Koon; brothers, Dean Koon and Gene (Marlene) Koon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
