Wallace (Wally) Oliver Thompson

Wally Thompson, 73, of Bismarck, ND, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024, at his home surrounded by family after a five year battle with cancer.   

A memorial service will be 10:30 AM, Monday, February 19, 2024 at Charity Lutheran Church, 120 Aspen Ave, Bismarck. Family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be 9:00 AM, Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

He was born on March 7, 1950 in Miles City, MT to Oliver and Mavis (Maas) Thompson. He grew up in Scranton, ND, where he graduated from High School in 1968. After High School, he enlisted in the US Army and served in the Vietnam War. After serving in the Army, he attended the University of North Dakota where he earned a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Sociology and a Masters of Arts degree in Counseling and Guidance. Using his education, Wally worked at Home on the Range for Boys, Badlands Human Service Center and West Central Human Service Center where he spent his career serving others in need.

Wally was married to Dianna Sipma on December 22, 1972 and to this union, he was blessed with two sons, Logan and Rocky. Wally’s sons meant everything to him. He was very proud of them and supported them in all they did.  Wally was a kind and gentle person. To know him was to love him.   Wally enjoyed reading, playing cards and board games, bowling, movies, music and yard work.  His greatest joy were his five grandchildren.  He was blessed to attend many sporting events to cheer them on.  Wally also enjoyed spending time with his siblings.  He was the oldest of five kids and was a great example to his brothers and sisters.  

He married Darlene Dvorak on March 12, 2004.  Wally and Darlene made their home in Dickinson, ND until they moved to Bismarck in 2018 to be closer to grandchildren.

He is survived by his children Logan (Jessie) Thompson, Rocky (Missy) Thompson, 5 grandchildren JJ Thompson, Eli Thompson, Clark Thompson, Macie Thompson and Layla Thompson, former wife and stepsons Celia Lindquist, Steve Lindquist and Matt Lindquist, stepsons Dustin (Christine) Nelson, Dallas (Renee) Nelson, Steve (Patty) May, Scott (Patricia) May, brothers Wayne (Therese) Thompson and Kermit (Evie) Thompson, sisters Linda (Dave) Czywczynski and Kay (Todd) Roth, nieces and nephews Adam (Kristin) Thompson, Jen (Matt) Mettler, Amy (Jason) Mazigian, Derek (Heather) Czywczynski, Dustin Czywczynski, Andy Thompson, Mitch (Ally) Thompson, DeAnn (Ben) Dingus, Matt (Desiree) Lokken, Chris Roth, and several great nieces and nephews.

Wally was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Darlene, and special friend Lorraine DeTenancour.
